Dear Editor,
I have been a satisfied subscriber to Clavier and Clavier
Companion magazines for many years. I have noticed, however, that
current editions of Clavier Companion magazine have been lacking
the year-end article and reference index that had been a feature in
December issues of the earlier edition of Clavier magazine. As one
who found this year-end index very useful, I am writing to request
its reinstatement in future issues of Clavier Companion.

Dear Editor,
Henry Doskey ’s article “Beethoven Goes to Hollywood”
(Nov/Dec 2012) covers much cinematic territory. To it I would add
three films.
About fifty minutes into the Marx Brothers’ The Big Store, Chico
and Harpo perform a one-piano, four-hands duo that redefined the
piano duo. Oscar Levant’s Gershwin Concerto dream sequences in
American in Paris and his double concerto with John Garfield (Isaac
Stern) at the end of Humoresque are not to be missed.
As Dr. Doskey wrote, one can evaluate Levant as “a great pianist
wasted.” However, Levant’s books remain an ongoing delight. In
them we hear how Harpo Marx asked Levant to teach him the
harp part of Ravel’s Introduction and Allegro for harp, flute, clarinet,
and string quartet, the upshot of which you can find in Levant’s
Memoirs of an Amnesiac. If I remember correctly, therein lies
Levant’s question to Vladimir Horowitz that went something like
this: “Mr. Horowitz, do you carry your octaves with you or do you
ship them ahead?”
