Bling 11month-old Papillon Favorite trial: I think that’s changed a few
times over the past 14 years. We probably trial 40 weekends a year, give
or take a few, so it’s a hard question. Right now, it’s probably the
trials in central Oregon for Mt. Bachelor Kennel Club. My wife and I trial
secretary there, the club is fantastic, and we make it into a little mini
vacation with golf and friends. Your next dog: They are already here! Zing
and Bling Afghan and Pap , 11 months old and counting. Eventually, we’ll
get another BC and we still hope that someday Phoenix will be returned to
us, too. For the 2006 AKC Nationals my wife Robin and I ﬂew to Tampa,
Florida, a few days early to get acclimated to the time change. We left
Star and Phoenix home with the pet sitter while we took Keno, Vixen, and
Tigger to Tampa. On Thursday morning at about 8:00 a.m., we got a phone
call from the sitter. She had been walking Phoenix with her Paps very
early in the morning. They had been attacked by a German Shepherd and
Phoenix slipped his collar and got loose. My wife ﬂew home to help
search and I stayed in Tampa for Nationals. Phoenix has never been found.

That might be correct, but the little fast dog is also much easier to pull
off a correct obstacle. They have more steps between jumps but can
redirect themselves in a couple of feet. That changes how you train
gambles, distance work, commitment points for crosses, and so on. Like I
said before, night and day! Sighthounds—I think they are a class of
their own. They can be really smart and driven, but they can also be kind
of hard-headed. The biggest challenge we’ve found is on how to motivate
and train while the dog is eager to play. That’s going to be different
for each dog. BF: Do you associate particular training challenges with one
breed or group of dogs? BF: Do you think that training and achieving
success with vastly different breeds of dogs has made you a better
trainer? RK: I don’t know if it’s made me a better trainer, but it
certainly has helped me become a better handler in the ring. All three
different breeds need their own style of handling and special emphasis. I
think that having to switch from one to the other helps me focus when I
need to. B F : To what do you attribute your success at the AKC Nationals?
RK: I’d say that the motivation issue with the Afghans has been
consistent with all three that we’ve had. The other training challenges
we’ve had with the BC and Paps are just normal things that cross breed
boundaries. January 07 | Clean Run RK: I have great dogs and a wonderful
wife who helps train them. It’s basically that simple. Without the
basics, there wouldn’t be much of a chance at Nationals. The other part
of the equation is feeling comfortable in that setting. I’ve been in the
ring a lot, with many different titles and goals on the line, and had to
perform. That history helps when you know that you just need to get the
