Jump By Diane Goodspeed This inexpensive, lightweight PVC practice jump is
simple to construct and separates into four pieces for easy transport.
Constructed with a ﬁxed bar at a height of 8 , and cups for a
displaceable bar at 12 , 16 , 20 , and 24 , the jump can be repositioned
with ease during training sessions and can be carried two at a time. Since
sets of jumps stack neatly, they require little storage space. Materials
• 1 – 10' length of 1 PVC pipe • 1 – 10' length of ¾ PVC pipe •
4 – 1 PVC tees • 6 – 1 PVC end caps • 10 – #6 screws with nuts
and washers to ﬁt • 1 – roll colored electrical or PVC tape • PVC
glue Tools Needed • Pencil or marker • Tape measure • PVC pipe
cutter, hacksaw, or chop/ miter saw • Drill and bits Making and
Attaching the Jump Cups The jump has cups at 12 , 16 , 20 , and 24 . To
make the jump cups and attach them, do the following: 1 2 3 Place an end
cap on a ﬂat surface with the solid end up. Mark a line down the middle
of the cap. Drill two holes large enough for the #6 screw approximately ¼
on either side of your line. Cut the cap in half, following your mark. Cut
four caps so that you have eight, pre-drilled jump cups. On each of the 24
pipe lengths, mark one end at ¾ . Glue an end cap on and twist tight to
cover the pipe to the ¾ mark. Drill holes through the 24 pipe at the
following spots as measured from the top of the pipe with an end cap: •
9 ½ • 13 ½ • 17 ½ • 21 ½ If you’re using PVC from the
hardware/home store, you can mark and drill on the factory printed spec
line to keep your holes aligned. If you’re using furniture-grade PVC,
you may want to draw a guide line on the pipe to help you keep the holes
lined up. Use the same drill bit as for the jump cups, and keep the drill
as straight as possible while drilling through the pipe. Cutting the PVC 1
Using the entire 10' length of 1 PVC pipe, cut the following lengths and
quantities of pipe from longest to shortest: • 1 – 43 long piece • 2
– 24 long pieces • 2 – 4 ½ long pieces • 4 – 5 long pieces The
last pieces cut 5 long are the feet. If you are short on pipe or have a
smidge extra, these pieces can absorb the change without impacting your
jump construction. 9 ½ 13 ½ 2 Using the 10' piece of ¾ PVC pipe, cut a
42 ½ piece. You can cut the leftover pipe at 42 ½ to create a second bar
and a 35 ground pole. Note: At ﬁrst glance you may wonder why you can’t
use 1 PVC for both the ﬁxed jump bar and the adjustable bar. You need to
use ¾ PVC pipe for the adjustable jump bar because 1 pipe in the jump
cups will be too tight a ﬁt. 17 ½ 4 Put a jump cup onto a #6 screw and
thread through holes in the 24 pipe. Use a washer and nuts to tighten.
