8 Serpentine handling is not just another pretty handling maneuver that will work if executed correctly (like some handling does). There are skills the dog needs to know in order for you to be out of the dog's way. Dogs that are not trained are subject to collisions with their handlers! 2 3 Serpentine: Jumps #2 and #3 Place your dog in a sit-stay at a position as if he has just landed from jump #1 of the serpentine. Lead out to your serp position at what would be jump #2 of the serpentine. Release your dog (recall to heel) and drive through to what would be jump #3 of the serpentine (run-by). Do the drill on both sides. If you're successful with both drills then you can put it all together and use three jumps as shown in Figure 9. But these two-jump drills will be your "back to kindergarten" work if your dog starts asking you questions in the future. By back to kindergarten I simply mean breaking it down into these initial steps used to re-teach the skill. Now add the third jump and then add a serpentine configuration to sequence work! 9 2 1 3 Serpentine: Putting the Two Parts Together When you've perfected the two parts of a serpentine, jumps #1 and #2 (send to catch up to heel) and jumps #2 and #3 (catch up to heel to run-by), you can add a third jump and put it all together.
