about when we are coming home to
them. They are trying to make us happy. We just aren't making it very easy.
We've come to believe that a good
dog is a dog who is obedient to our directives, oblivious to the fact that truly
great dogs control their own behavior.
We have been told that hugging them
when they jump on us is reinforcing a
bad behavior, so we ignore them when
they ask for our affection. We have
made them so afraid to be wrong that
they seem to exist in a form of learned
helplessness willing only to do what
they are commanded to do. And when
we have problems with their behavior,
we increase our training thus applying
even more pressure on dogs who are
acting in ways we don't like precisely
because of the pressure they feel. We
have become so fixated on what our
dogs are doing that we stopped asking
why they were doing it.
My team and I couldn't help but wonder what would happen if we starting

focusing on how our dogs feel rather
than what they do? How would they
respond if we stopped making them
earn our affection and just gave it to
them as freely and unconditionally
as they give to us? What if, instead
of making our dogs feel helpless, we
made them feel capable? As it turns
out, the answer is nothing short of
astonishing.

The more we hugged our jumping
dogs, the less they jumped. The more
we shared our food with them, the less
they begged when we couldn't. The
more we treated them like friends-
albeit young friends from foreign
countries in need of our guidance-
the more they learned how to behave
without being told. We stopped telling
our dogs what to do and began asking them. What took us weeks to train
using positive reinforcement took minutes when we asked them to imitate
our own actions. We stopped training

The move away from training and
toward social learning, what we've
named the Bond-Based Approach®,
wasn't an easy one for a large service
dog school like Canine Assistants. But
it's now been nearly four years, and
we know we are never going back.
We have to warn our clients that some
people may be shocked to see service
dogs who aren't controlled by obedience commands. Case in point: it's an
odd phenomenon, but strangers seem
to believe it's entirely acceptable to
give commands to working dogs they
encounter in public settings. When our
