DEB JONES On Course with... By Martha Faulk Paul Young MF: How does
Parkinson’s affect your training and handling? MF: How did you get
started in agility? PY: I’ve been interested in dogs only for the last
10 years and agility since late 1998. My wife, Deb Joseph, has been into
dogs for a long time. When I married her, I became interested, too. Deb,
who had been doing obedience, tracking, and field work with her
Labradors, bred her foundation bitch, Katy, in 1997. I took Punkin, the
runt of the litter, so that I would have a dog to train too and get more
time to spend with Deb. When I retired from teaching computer science at
the University of Washington in Seattle, I moved to Wisconsin where Deb
was already living. We did a lot of obedience, tracking, and hunt tests,
but as winter approached, we decided to go indoors for some agility
training with Barb Mattheis. Punkin and I began weekly training with Barb
and continued with her through Punkin’s MACH. In 1999 I went to the
Labrador Nationals in Indiana and saw Greg Fontaine run his Lab, Ivan. It
was the first agility trial I had ever seen because up to that I time I
was serious only about tracking and hunt tests. I was especially impressed
with how fast Greg and Ivan ran. About a year later, in Louisville,
Kentucky, I ran Punkin in the second agility trial I had ever been to. It
was a four-day AKC trial and Punkin got both Novice titles there, earning
three first-place finishes in the 20 division against some really good
dogs. I was hooked by the time we finished. MF: Since you did not get
started in agility until you were in your early 60s, and you are now 70,
do you feel there are disadvantages in such a relatively late start? PY:
As far as the training goes, I think it has been to our advantage to have
proficiency in field work. This is true of the training I’ve done with
both Punkin and Punkin’s daughter, Bit. With dogs trained in blind
retrieving fetching birds they have not seen fall , you have dogs that are
used to trusting your handling when they’re being directed under precise
control to a fallen bird that’s 100 to 200 yards away. Because Punkin
and Bit have faith in my control, I’m able to do blind crosses with
both. Although most trainers consider blind crosses taboo because you
briefly have your back to the dog as you set a line, they work for me.
I’m often unable to do front crosses because my motion isn’t that
quick, so I need to have a dog willing to remain under my control as I
cross her path with my back turned. I often flick my arm behind my back
to cue the dog about what’s coming next. I’m able to do this with my
fast Labs because they have faith in my directions. In my years of
trialing, I’ve been knocked down only three times when doing blind
crosses. As a consequence, I have learned never to do a blind cross when
my dog is coming out of the chute unless I am certain that I can beat her
charging toward the next obstacle. I’ve also learned the hard way that
it’s unwise to start a blind cross when your dog is already coming at
you in midair. It’s hard to avoid being knocked down when your back is
turned and your dog has no time to read the cross. MF: How do you compare
training for field work with training for agility? PY: Well, of course
any young person who is fast has an advantage. But, in 2004, I was
diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. As a result of the disease, my
biggest disadvantage now is that my left side is much slower than my right
side, and I’m never quite sure what my left arm is doing. I limp slowly
out on my lead-outs, but when I start to run, my Parkinson’s partly
disappears, and for a short time I have the wonderful illusion that I am
normal. I have taken out a few jumps myself, though. On one occasion, I
took down a big winged jump on a lead-out and poor Punkin had to jump over
the sprawling mess three times. 20 PY: After I started running Punkin in
agility, we continued to do hunt tests. After achieving the AKC Master
Hunter title and other field titles, I became more excited about agility.
Agility requires a different sort of teamwork than is called for in hunt
tests, which require more difficult controlled distance handling. In
contrast, agility teamwork has a much faster, more intimate, dance-like
interaction going on in a much shorter time. I’m especially proud of
Punkin’s GMPR title, which stands for Grand Master Pointing Retriever
and is a significant title issued by the American Pointing Labrador
Association. Not only does this test require proficiency in retrieving,
including blind retrieves, but Clean Run | February 07 Warning : Unknown : The session id contains invalid characters, valid
