a travel contact board this can come in very handy in the house for
working two-on/two-off positions. You can prop it up on a chair or the
couch. The dog can get a lot of exercise jumping up on a couch and it’s
also a great way to keep the nose touch and body position strong. You can
also work with a “hit-it board” if you are training running contacts.
It doesn’t take much room and is very good exercise for the dog. And if
you have even just one jump, you can do quite a bit with that in the
house. Training outdoors is always preferable but when bad weather does
not permit it, get creative. Many really fun training exercises can be

CARDS! Heeling work: There’s nothing like some quick, fast heeling work
to brush up on your teamwork. Physical health check: Go over every inch of
your dog’s body. Put each joint through its range of motion, spin your
dog to the right and left, and move the neck in all directions have the
dog follow a treat up, down, and side to side . Does your dog resist you
or show discomfort with a certain movement? Is your dog having a hard time
turning his head to the right? If you ﬁnd something of concern, winter is
good time for a vet check and to do some rest and rehab. Teach some new
tricks: Studies show that a dog engaged in 5 minutes of tricks equals 20
minutes of physical activity to the brain. Help your active dog burn off
some energy by learning some fun new tricks like Play Dead, High Five,
Crawl, Hand Touch, and my personal favorite, Get the Beer from the Fridge!
Seminars: Hit some “non-agility” related seminars such as massage,
Tellington TTouch Training™, nutrition, or clicker training. Explore
agility resources: Buy or borrow some agility-related DVDs or catch up on
your reading, especially your Clean Run magazines. Toy play: If you have a
dog that’s just not interested in toys, now is a good time to work on
that. If you caught up on your Clean Run reading, there are lots of good
articles on how to motivate your dog to play with toys; pick one article
and give the suggestions a try. Stays: It seems like Agility Dogs always
need work in this area! Don’t stress out if you can’t get out and
train on agility equipment. Most dogs are just as happy curled up on the
