handler want from your dog in the way of turns and asked you to clearly
define a “good turn” by marking it on the ground. We also asked that
you spend some time observing dogs in general, and in particular, dogs
that are built like your own, or jump like your own, and how they turn
whilst over a bar. Next we looked at how to reward a dog for maintaining
control over his rear whilst turning his head into the turn over the jump
and we then went on to examine the point at which a dog should accelerate
out of a turn. urns Part 2 The Third Marker The next stage is to reward
your dog for making the turn and accelerating out again. This is a really
vital part of turns that is often skipped. Click as the dog arrives level
with your foot, having maintained control, and reward as he goes past by
using a ball or a toy thrown in the direction that your feet are pointing.
Kristy and Boogie are working the wrap around the wing. Boogie is working
well here, clearly driving around the corners. Early Acceleration Out of
the Turn This picture is the wrap on the other side and shows something to
be careful of. Boogie is starting to run out and round his turn—or in
other words, he’s accelerating too early. One of the things that Boogie
loves to do is race and I’ve made shameless use of it in other places in
his training. I’ve set him up to race “scary-hat men” judges in the
ring, to race me to get him past ill-mannered dogs ringside, and so on.
Yet in this photo you can clearly see that Boo is leaning into his turn
and already beginning to accelerate; in this case, racing his expected
ball. Beginning right on top of the bar as he is here, with no speed into
the turn, he can still make it look good. But if he did this approaching
the jump at speed and with it set to full height, the result would be a
wide turn and wasted strides. He needed to go back a stage and do a little
more work on the wrap on this side. After the first thrown reward, be very
careful with your criterion— that’s the reason for the marked circle
extending past the jump. Hold your criterion clearly in your mind and
don’t reward what you 60 Boogie is accelerating too early which causes
him to run out and round his turn. don’t want! If the dog accelerates
too early as Boogie is beginning to do here, don’t click: reset and try
again. Once again, video is a very useful review tool because by now the
dogs will be working at speed making your judgment calls more difficult.
