Judge’s Debriefing CPE Standard and Jackpot By Rick Whiting On Sunday,
November 19, 2006, True North Agility held their ﬁrst CPE trial under
their new name at the Dressage Centre in Mount Uniacke, Nova Scotia. Thank
you to John and Lorna MacKinley for inviting me to judge the event and to
all of the competitors for coming out and enjoying the day. I would also
like to thank all the volunteers who worked hard to make the trial a
success. The Standard Course The course shown in Figure 1 is for levels 4
through C which are the higher levels in CPE. I tried to design a course
with some speed sections along with some handling sections. There was an
off-course possibility right at the start from the #2 double to the #3
tunnel, but a good lead-out helped to eliminate this possibility. Most
competitors handled this section very well; only about six dogs took the
dogwalk instead of the tunnel. Those with a good send-out could send their
dog into the #4 tunnel and then wait at the entrance until the dog exited
#4 and mounted the dogwalk as shown in Figure 2. Handlers had to make some
sort of cross before the teeter or do a rear cross at the teeter. Many
people were afraid of a rear cross and attempted a front cross between #6
and #7; this proved to be awkward. Quite a few people did a front cross
half way between the dogwalk and #6, which worked reasonably well. The
rear cross at the teeter was my ﬁrst choice for the side change, but
only a few competitors actually used that strategy. 5 8 9 4 7 3 6 12 10 15
2 13 16 11 The handler sends the dog into the tunnel at #4 and waits there
to pick up the dog on the dogwalk. Then the handler sets up the dog for
#6, which provides a straight line to the #7 teeter. The handler can make
the necessary side change for the next part of the course by crossing
