Canine
Athlete

There are many sport activities and athletic events for our canine companions and
new ones are always developing, Treibball is an example. Dog owners like to exercise and be active with their pets. In order to keep our four legged athletes healthy
and have a long extensive injury-free career, we need to identify what classification
of exercise that they do so we can provide them with the proper nutritional requirements for their sport. Exercise increases metabolism because chemical energy is
transformed into physical work. So, it is important to feed and support the body
with the appropriate, good-quality nutrients. The goal for preventative nutrition
is to optimize quality and longevity of life, and minimize diseases; it is a proactive
approach. As Hippocrates, The Father of Medicine, once said in 431 BC, “Let food be
thy medicine and medicine be thy food.” Nutrition is the foundation of life.
Classifications of Exercise
There are basically three classifications of exercise:

Sprinter: High intensity sustained for less than 2 minutes. Uses primarily anaerobic (without oxygen) metabolism. Examples are agility, flyball, dock diving,
lure coursing, and Frisbee competition.
Intermediate: Lasting a few minutes to hours. Uses anaerobic metabolism initially then mostly aerobic (with oxygen). Examples are field trials, tracking, herding, Treibball, swimming, Frisbee, and some working dogs.
Endurance: Lasting many hours to days. Uses aerobic (with oxygen) metabolism. Examples are sled dogs, some working dogs, search and rescue.
Owners of canine athletes need to feed the appropriate amount of food in kcals
(kilo-calories) per day while training and competing (and even during the off12
season) based on metabolic demands.
Sprinters may need up to three times
the resting energy requirement (RER),
so carbohydrates and simple sugars
are needed to provide fuel quickly. Intermediate exercise may need up to
six times the RER, so a diet higher in fat
is required as the amount of work increases. Endurance exercise may need
up to ten times the RER, so the diet will
need to consist of high amounts of fat
and more protein.
Canine Daily Energy Requirements
Providing the right amount of energy
from the right source is necessary for
the canine athlete to optimally perform. The ingredient recommendations are based on the fact that fat provides 8.5 metabolized energy per gram
whereas protein and carbohydrates
supply 3.5 ME/gram. There are charts
and formulas to calculate the kcals per
day according to the weight, age, activity level, and altered status of the dog.
