For the love of the game

Keeping costs on lead

Tips from Tammy

Tammy wanted the agility portion of
the event to be just as special. "I wanted
every person attending to have a good
time and to run their hearts out. Not
running for a Q, not running for a title,
not running for points or qualifiers for
nationals, but running because they are
in love with running and with the sport."

Cost were kept down to about $12 a
run, with a percentage going back to
the winners and the rest back into the
event. Tammy noted, "We are lucky
enough to have volunteers with master
scoring skills and electronic timers. We
also have had volunteer judges in the
past as well, which keeps costs down.
Next year we will be bringing in a judge
from out of state."

Tammy suggests if a group or person
would like to try a similar event: "I think
you just have to do it and learn from
each event. I will say that we eliminated
refusals and let time take care of that issue, and off-courses are now a 20-point
fault instead of an E."

She continued, "I wanted each person
to run to the best of their abilities
and feel brave, safe, and comfortable
enough to do it. I want to encourage
healthy competition and remind people of why they actually do agility with
their dogs."
The event offered a combined class that
consisted of a European-style agility
run and a jumping run. A speed course
with just jumps and tunnels was, "a
very simple course so the young and
inexperienced dogs/handlers could
participate too. We allow people to
choose their own jump height and use
AKC heights (4", 8", 12", 16", 20", 24"),"
Tammy said.

A donation of photography added to the
community effort: "A friend of mine took
beautiful photos this year and we asked
for donations. The donations from the
photos will pay for the judge next year."

She continued, "We had many clean
rounds this year and very, very few last
year, and that is encouraging. Also,
knowing someone who is a master
scorer is a big, big plus. The timers and
scoring made the event seem very real.
Oh, people like cake, so offer cake as
the winning prize!"

The event's fresh approach and astronomical spin attracted a wide spectrum
of handlers. According to Tammy, "For
some, this was their first time out in
any ring. We also had national winners,
world team members and participants
from as far away as Detroit, Michigan.
