1 1 Some handlers chose to do a front cross on the landing side of the

sequence to set up handling #10-#12 as a gamble . were two other handling
options executed by top handlers on this section that I didn’t
anticipate. Shown in Figure 5 is the option to do a front cross on the

seen in Figure 6. Both these options allowed the handler to get a tight
turn when the dog was coming out of the tunnel and to keep the dog
extended. Even with the wrong-course tunnel looking very inviting, the
#11-#12-#13 sequence didn’t cause the problems you might anticipate.
Some dogs took the tunnel after jump #11, but many handled this section
very well. The key was to get a line from #11#12 that didn’t have dogs
blasting toward the tunnel. Most handlers accomplished this by putting the
dog into city mode with a slight stride break . Yet, unlike earlier places
on course, the timing here was done quite well and the move did not cause
a signiﬁcant burp in the dog’s motion. T h e #13-#14 sequence required
a side switch. How the switch was accomplished was driven by handling
choices made for #7-#11. Handlers that went with the dog to #11 either did
a rear cross at the poles or kept the dog on the left in the poles; and
then they either did a front cross at the poles or a rear cross at #14.
Handlers who were able to be ahead of the dog at #11 including those that
handled it as gamble were able to do a front cross before the poles.
Coming off #14, several large dogs took a wrong course to obstacle #3. I
did not anticipate that wrong course when designing. The key to the
#14-#15-#16 line was to have the dog going over #15 on an angle as shown
by the red line in Figure 7. This maneuver should have driven how to
handle #14. Some handlers saw this and took the time to set up a line by
pushing the dog out some before #14. Dogs, especially larger dogs, that
didn’t get the line set up had a very hard push to get to #16 and had
extra strides in the sequence. There were some wrong courses after #16
over jump #20. The closing sequence was designed to be a fun run out and
it was for most. Still a few handlers started running before the dog was
committed to #18, and the dog chased after them, getting a run-by on #18.
Also, some dogs dropped a bar on #18 or #19 because handlers were ahead
and moving away. O ve r a l l the 20 division had the most difﬁculty
with this course. But it was a fun course to watch and judge. D Carol has
