Bend work Set up two bend work stations and one station for the broad
jump, along with two spread jump stations and several single-bar jumps for
continued practice. Use the same set up as Week 4 for the bend work and
increase the jump bars to full competition height while taking into
account the different progression rate of each individual dog. Then start
to vary the angles of the jumps as shown in Figure 5. Remember to lower
the height of the bars when changing the angles of the jumps and then work
back up to competition height. start varying handler position. You can also
have your student without a dog toss the motivator. If the dog is having
trouble jumping the broad jump, you can put a nonwinged single-bar jump at
the beginning of the broad jump in place of the front marker poles as
Figure 6 shows. Set the bar low and after a couple of reps, quickly lower
the bar until it disappears below the first plank. You can bring this jump
back when you start to increase the length of the broad jump to remind the
dog. I prefer not to put the single-bar jump in the middle of the broad
jump because it is easier to fade when it is in front of the broad jump.
The jump uprights can easily turn into marker poles. 5 Start with the Week
4 setup for the bend work and then vary the angles of the jumps. 6 Set up
the broad jump with two planks and the four marker poles as shown on the
left. If the dog has trouble jumping the planks, replace the front marker
poles with a nonwinged jump as shown on the right. » The broad jump
Teaching the broad jump is always a little tricky because over the past
weeks, we have been shaping our dogs to walk over planks. Now we are
asking them to jump over what looks like a perfectly good plank. Set up
the broad jump with two planks and the four marker poles as shown in
Figure 6. You may want to have a single-bar jump nearby for
troubleshooting. I do not shape the broad jump since the dogs will attempt
walking all over it. I use a lure initially. Put the dog in a sit-stay and
have the handler lead out past the jump. Release the dog and toss the
motivator forward and low. The dog should jump this obstacle long and flat
so tossing the toy low and forward will encourage this. When the dog is
successful, 7 » Shaping jumps Continue having students do single-jump
work over the spreads and single-bar jumps following the lesson plan in
Linda’s articles. The handler’s body position is dependent on the
progression her dog has made in class. If students have been working on
their recallto-heel exercises, then at week 5 the dogs should be ready to
put the recall exercise at a jump. » Recall to heel In my foundation
class, I teach the recall-toheel exercises on the flat designed by Linda
Mecklenburg. The technique was published in Clean Run, “Using Heel
Position in Agility” in the July through September 2004 issues. This is
an ongoing exercise from foundation level through the beginner class and
can be used with single jumps, depending on the dog’s level of learning.
This exercise is excellent for collection work and is vital to the dog’s
progression through class. Figure 7 shows the early stages of the
exercise, without a jump, and then progresses to the exercise with the
jump added. At week five, the dogs will most likely be ready to put this
