Tired of lugging and lifting your A-frame or having to mow around it? competition jump height. For example, a Sheltie expected to compete at 12" should never begin jumping at 12". Start off slowly at wrist height or lower. Foundation training doesn’t seem very glamorous in comparison to jumping and weaving, but in the long run you’ll have a dog that will achieve success in the ring more quickly and with a lower risk of injury to his growing body. Your dog has his whole life ahead of him. You can never go wrong with a conservative approach to jumping! underlying skeletal concerns. As he begins to gain more control of his jumping style and his body, the heights of the jumps may be gradually increased. The last component of the jumping puzzle includes the total number of jumps a young dog performs. In the American Little League, pitchers under the age of 18 are limited in the number of pitches they may throw cumulatively, both daily and weekly. These limitations are set to reduce the stresses of the repetitive motions demanded by pitching. Many studies have examined the negative effects of the repetitive forces of pitching on a child’s and adolescent’s body. While there have not been directly correlated studies of repetitive injury in dogs, it is safe to deduce that repetitive activities may produce both immediate and future adverse effects on a dog’s growing skeleton. While training young dogs, do not overdo it. You risk the chance of both physical and psychological problems. Everything should be performed in moderation. Do not practice agility with your puppy for hours each day. A few times a week for 10 minutes or less each time is adequate to start. Remember—there are many other things to work on with a young dog. Judgment and common sense are part of the equation; essentially you, the handler of the dog, must make the ultimate decision. Your dog has his whole life ahead of him. You can never go wrong with a conservative approach to jumping—and you have so many other things to teach your dog before you get to jumping! D 1 Lust G, Geary JC, Sheffy BE. Development of hip dysplasia in dogs. Am J Vet Res 1973;34:87-91. 2 Injury Potential and Maturity The injury potential of the dog needs to be examined. If the dog is prone to hip or elbow dysplasia, jumping should be limited. For example, if a seven-monthold Labrador Retriever puppy has had preliminary hip radiographs performed and one of his hips demonstrated mild dysplasia, this should be factored into his beginning jump training. Upon skeletal maturity, the dog’s hips may be perfect. However, if jumping was pursued too early, the lack of skeletal maturity and muscle development may increase the progression of the hip dysplasia. Ideally, this dog should wait to begin formalized jumping until he has reached skeletal maturity—approximately 18 months of age. This does not mean he cannot begin foundation training and start working with jump bumps, for example—it does mean he cannot pursue jumping aggressively. Move It! is a revolutionary device that allows one person to move an A-frame without any lifting. Move It! works on all different surfaces, both indoors and out. And, nothing needs to be permanently attached to the A-frame. Move It! takes seconds to use and is so easy that a child could do it. Designed to fit a standard 36" wide A-frame. Custom sizes available. MOVE IT! So When Can You Start Jumping? Depending on the factors previously described, a dog may begin jumping anytime between 6 and 18 months of age. When in doubt, begin later. I firmly believe that a puppy should be allowed to be a puppy, with the appropriate boundaries. But here are some general guidelines. If you have a large breed dog prone to canine hip dysplasia or a dog that takes jumps with wild abandon, hold off until the dog is 12 to 18 months old to introduce jumps. If you have a small breed dog with good body awareness, you can begin to introduce jumps between 6 and 12 months. And this time frame encompasses an introduction—not a full program of competition height jumping. The introduction of jumps should be slow and progressive. Beginning a sevenmonth-old Border Collie puppy on jump bumps once he has achieved the necessary foundation and body awareness is fine as long as the dog does not have any Visit our website to see a video of the Move It! in action. ® Riser WH.
