Reinforce your dog for committing to a jump
while you move to serp position.

1. Send your dog to jumps #1 and
#2 and run to serp position at
jump #3 as shown in Figure 5a.
Throw the reinforcer to reward
your dog for not pulling off the
jump while you get into position.

Use a threadle to bring your dog off the
middle jump and guide him to #2.
The focus here is practice send and
gos while running into serpentine
positions, just as you did with front
crosses. Reinforce your dog for
committing to a jump while you leave
to go to serp position.
Do the pinwheel.

you are starting with the dog on

A sharp shoulder turn is not clear enough to bring my dog off the middle jump,
plus my body language is almost identical to when I asked him to do the middle
jump in 6B. Use a threadle to be clear and avoid your dog losing his distance
understanding.
It's very important, as you work all the drills in this series
of articles, that you intermittently reward all the jumps.
We want our dog to power just as hard over the first jump
as he does the third, middle, and last jump.

To maintain your dog's understanding
of when he should drive away and
when he should turn in to you, exhibiting response to your shoulder turn, it
is important to add threadle variations
into your pinwheel training.
If I want to have my dog skip the
middle jump and perform a 180
when there is a pinwheel configuration, I want to threadle my dog off
the middle jump rather than simply
relying on a sharper shoulder turn
which may not be nearly enough
information for the dog. If I am not
clear on this point, and expect my
dog to pull off the middle jump on
shoulder turn alone, it is likely that I
will eventually lose my distance skills
