Darcey was more difficult. Her play is
coming along and she will now tug with
me, but it's not yet reliable enough to
use to build behaviors. She wasn't impressed by the shaping game. It didn't
matter what food I used, she'd rather
stand and do nothing than jump for
food or toys. If I prompted her she'd
jump, but it wasn't pretty. Most sight
hounds have an odd jumping style due
to their build, so I decided I'd leave it to
her to decide how to jump since the
height of UK jumps is hardly a challenge
for her. I junked the idea of shaping and
tried the sends that I was working with
the boys. She'd send across one jump
for a thrown toy, but not two. She'd go
around the second jump, which tells me
the reward value for the jumps wasn't
high enough. What to do? I was playing
with my granddaughter (she was trying
to do the jumps too) and Darcey was
playing ball. She went across the first
jump coming toward me and I threw her
ball out sideways.

Seesaws

settle into an assumption that the boards
won't move. I have had so many dogs
come for remedial training on the seesaw
and I think it's because of that assumption. So I start with a propped up seesaw
and ask the dog to jump onto the end,
which is perhaps 1 inch off the ground.
For all three youngsters, I propped up
my seesaw on a jump wing at one end
so that there was perhaps 1 inch of
movement. I clicked and rewarded for
one paw on, then two paws on. The
eventual aim is to have the dog jump
onto the end of the seesaw, so he's facing the exit, and then be released forward. Again, the release needs to be
highly rewarded, as that's what will be
taken into the ring.
Shady was very unhappy that the board
moved and he was clearly unhappy that
I wanted him to touch it. I went with it
and just rewarded any paw near to the
board, then one paw touching it, then
one paw pushing it, and then him standing on it with one paw. Once he had the
idea, he made rapid progress. I had a
sneaking suspicion that he would have
