something with his nose might be counterproductive if he runs to touch interesting looking jumps! Jumping over or getting onto something to touch a target might be useful for the dog to learn, however. If your dog is really frightened of new things, your success with this may be limited, but making touching new things as much fun as possible for the dog will be beneficial. If you work your way diligently through these pre-agility exercises, you will find starting to run course segments much less work, with much better results. Put in the time up front and you and your dog will both be more confident and ready to be on course. © CLEAN RUN training opportunity. Don’t get frustrated; instead use it as an opportunity to teach your dog to pay attention to you with a distraction, run a course with another dog running around, or tolerate a nosy butt-sniffer. We guarantee it will happen at a trial, so why not train it while you have the opportunity? During group classes, watch other handlers. This is a great opportunity for you to see what works and what doesn’t. Did they do a maneuver you thought was impossible? Ask them to show you how. Does their dog seem really focused or completely disinterested— w h y ? Wa t ch h o w g r e a t On the other hand, a friendly dog who gets the crazies and runs around out of control provides you with a great handlers work with their dogs, and analyze why less accomplished handlers are having trouble. Are you doing something that demotivates? Maybe someone else is too, and you can learn from that. While you’re preparing for competition, take the dog to a couple of trials where you aren’t actually competing. Use this as an opportunity to play games, get your routines down, get the dog used to the environment, and to make it fun for the dog. Use your pre-equipment time to build a relationship with your dog and to explore the skills you’ll need to have a great dog and be a good competitor. The time invested won’t be wasted! Build your foundation strong and you’ll have a willing and able partner for a long time. Pitfalls and Opportunities If you find yourself in a class with an unfriendly dog, get out, even if it’s the only class in your area. It isn’t a good situation for you or your dog. One bad experience can cause months of heartache and retraining for you both. D Mandy Book and Cheryl S. Smith are the authors of Right On Target: Taking Dog Training to a New Level and Quick Clicks: 40 Fast and Fun Behaviors to Train with a clicker (both available at www.cleanrun.com). They both compete in agility and clicker train their own and others’ dogs. O’Davak’s Encore Bound – “Cory” Feb 3, 2000 – Dec 27, 2007 We first met Cory at an agility class and we knew then that this little guy was special. He pranced when he walked and his eyes danced as he enjoyed every minute of his life. He was a happy, silly, handsome boy who loved life and was happiest when he was with his Mom and friends. Cory loved agility and he let you know it by his attitude and speed. He encouraged his teammates to go faster, jump higher, and celebrated when a difficult sequence was mastered. His enthusiasm was contagious and he always entertained spectators with his spirit. He thought that every run was a Q despite the fact that his scribe sheet said otherwise. He made us smile with all of his “antics” and his love for life. He endeared himself to us by his attitude, smile and happy-go-lucky demeanor. He knew what was important in life and lived his to the fullest. He taught us a lesson of enjoying and living in the moment. Cory was “special” to his friends both on and off the agility field. His agility runs will be missed, but his sparkling presence will be missed more. He touched so many hearts in so many different ways. To know him was to love him.
