Motion Forward Cues Forward Motion Acceleration Turning Cues Lateral motion Deceleration Collection Cue No motion Motion is my primary cue. My motion naturally cues my dog. My motion gives my dog directional information, and it is motivating for him as well. If I am moving forward, especially if I am accelerating, that is a forward cue. If I am moving laterally relative to my dog or decelerating, those are turning cues. It is important to recognize that when I am moving laterally or decelerating to cue a turn, I am still in motion. Those cues will typically result in relative collection if the spacing between the obstacles supports it. In situations where I need true collection and a round jumping arc, having no motion is the best cue. See Figure 1. Because my dog naturally reads my motion or lack thereof, I am always giving my dog a motion cue whether intentionally or not. So, I must always be aware of how I am moving on the course. I must also be aware that while I may deliver a motion cue appropriately, I cannot isolate that motion cue from my other natural cues (shoulders, location, eyes) and those will influence my dog as well. Motion naturally “trumps” all other cues. I try to use that to my advantage; I do not use learned cues that tell my dog to ignore my motion cues. To maintain consistency, I must move appropriately and should not use verbal commands to override my dog’s response to motion cues. In my system, my dog needs directional information on the approach to all turning obstacles such as jumps, straight tunnels, and collapsed tunnels. For these obstacles, my dog is dependent on my motion cues for directional information. My dog does not need directional information until the completion of nonturning obstacles such as contact obstacles, the table, curved tunnels, and weave poles. For these obstacles, my dog must approach, perform, and complete them independent of my motion cues. As I cue each turning obstacle, I must provide a line of motion that helps my dog know where I want him to go after the obstacle he is approaching. My job as a handler is to run in the correct direction. As my dog approaches a turning obstacle, my motion should be appropriate for the direction he should go in when he lands. To allow me to move in the direction of the course, my dog needs to: 1) Be comfortable performing the obstacle closest to me, which means his path may converge on mine, and 2) Be willing to commit to the obstacle if given the appropriate forward cues. 1 Motion on Approach to Second Jump A Forward motion Forward cue B Lateral motion Turning cue C Deceleration Turning cue D No motion Collection cue Motion Cues Motion is the backbone of my handling system and understanding how to use it is the key to success. My dog understands my motion; it is my job to understand how to move correctly to cue him. Ideally, as my dog approaches one obstacle I should be moving toward the next. Sometimes this is not as easy as it sounds and requires creative thought and handling strategy to achieve. In addition to when I move, how I move is also important. For my dog to read and respond to changes in my motion, I must not make my transitions abruptly; they must be smooth to allow my dog time to read them and then react. Because my system is based on motion, I must be able to move to use it effectively. It is most suited for courses that have a logical flow (Standard agility, Jumpers). If I can move, it can be used successfully with all types of dog as long as I understand how to balance and combine the cues to achieve the desired effect for each individual teammate.
