JUMPING
Imagine that you are preparing for a big event
but your agility equipment has vanished!
All you have are two or three jumps.We asked
top-level trainers from all over the country about
what they would do under these circumstances.
The exercises they offer are sequences you can
do even if you have limited space and obstacles.

Pull Through - Push Through
Loop Drill
The objective of this drill is to practice
pull throughs and push throughs, where
the dog needs to pass in between two
jumps placed close together. Choose
cue combinations that will prepare the
dog to jump collected and bend over
the jumps and make sure to deliver
these while the dog is still on approach
to the jumps. Cues that naturally help
the dog to collect and bend include
deceleration and rotation towards
the dog. Trained cues might include an
opposite arm or a specific verbal cue
delivered on approach. Resist reactively
calling the dog back through gap after
he has already landed long or is heading
off course. Practicing the drill silently
is a useful way of making sure communication is clear and timely. Also, vary
handler locations and cue combinations
to ensure the pull throughs and push
throughs can be executed both with
the handler next to jumps #2 and #3
and also at a distance. A dog that does

not collect and bend over the jumps
may not have received strong enough
or timely turning cues or may need
some preliminary foundation jumping
work. In the former case, simply alter
the cue combination or timing until the
desired result is achieved. In the latter
case, work collection and bending on
a single jump first (see Linda Mecklenburg's Mastering Jumping Skills for Awesome Agility Dogs). The sequence can be
concluded after jump #6 or it can be
turned into a loop and repeated. Turn
the dog right, towards jump #2, to repeat the original sequence; turn the dog
left, toward jump #3, to alternate the
direction of the sequence. To enhance
the challenge, gradually increase the
distance between jump #1 and jumps
#2 and #3, and/or reduce the distance
between jumps #2 and 3#. D
