The pLay is The Thing
What remote-delivery devices may lack is
an element of play that can tip dogs into
the prey or play frame of mind, which
can really help build good distance work
in the long run. So trainers may have to
incorporate other methods of remote
treat delivery into their training plans.
There are many products available which
incorporate food with a toy to help build
toy drive and infuse each training session
with a large helping of play. A key factor in the success of these toys is the fact
that the dog can access the food reward
on his own, increasing the association between the behavior being reinforced (in
this case, working at a distance) and the
reward. It also increases the value of the
toy itself, which will be valuable as training progresses.
Many treat-holding toys are based on the
concept of one of the first and most popular product of this type: the Lotus Ball.
This product has sections or "petals" that
are lined with Velcro, holding the toy together after you insert treats inside. Dogs
can use their paws and teeth to pull open
the petals and get their own treat, which
many food-motivated dogs find very rewarding. The Lily and the Fern are similar toys that allow the dog to open them
without getting too close to the Velcro,
and which provide more ways to tug and
play than are possible with the Lotus Ball.
With dogs that are very small or that otherwise won't open toys held with Velcro,
you can use the Treat Hugger, which is a
soft toy with a place to slide a treat in between two sections of fleece. It is a light,
soft toy, and it may be a little harder to
throw a distance with accuracy, but for
dogs that dislike Velcro or who won't
work to get into the other types or toys
(or just for the added variety and fun), the
Treat Hugger works well. It also provides
a convenient transition to stuffed toys that
do not hold food.
Treat toys have evolved and there are now toys available that allow the dog to get the reward without your help,
and also ones that double as tug toys.
A new type of treat toy has recently been
developed-Zooma Chews. They are
100% edible dog toys designed for throwing and tugging. There are several shapes
to choose from, including a ball and a fly-
ing disc-type of toy called a Fetchin Flyer.
Both of these would work well for throwing to reward a dog at a distance. You can
let the dog gnaw on the toy a bit after each
exercise, and after the training session you
can actually give your dog the "toy" to eat
as a reward! For some dogs, this reward
option might bring out their best in distance training.
