make	sure	that	you	give	your	dog	the	
correct	amount	impulsion	to	get	him	
across	the	refusal	plane	with	confidence,	and	that	your	foot	is	pointing	at	
the	refusal	plane,	not	at	the	jump.

Troubleshooting the Backside Drills
Begin directly behind the upright and gradually move all the way across the face
of the jump. Then gradually start adding distance from the jump.

Backside Drill: Angled Approach
Once	your	dog	is	proficient	going	
straight	ahead	to	the	backside	of	
a	jump,	we	are	going	to	ask	him	to	
travel	across	the	face	of	the	jump	to

to	bring	this	behavior	to	fluency	as	
angled	approaches	with	distance	
are	a	must-have.	
Begin	this	training	from	directly	behind	
the	wing	where	the	dog	is	turning	and	
gradually	move	all	the	way	across	the	
face	of	the	jump	and	beyond.	This	
progression	is	shown	in	Figure 3.
As	in	the	previous	drill,	you	need	to

use	more	forward	motion	to	create	enough	juice	to	perform	the
