The dog's needs
If it takes thought to make sure your needs
are met, it takes forethought to make sure
the dog's needs are met. It can be difficult
to prepare for a competition when you are
unfamiliar with the show site. It is helpful to know what the venue is like prior to
entering the event because it relieves the
pressure of the unknown. Will you have
to crate your dog inside a noisy arena,
outside under trees near the rings, or keep
him in your vehicle? Knowing where your
dog will be during a competition allows
you to pack appropriately. What will you
do if the only place to crate is in a noisy
arena or close to the rings where it will
be difficult for your dog to rest? I recommended scouting out a safe space and
placing an exercise pen around the crate
with a cloth barrier. Crating near a busy
area without a barrier, where many people
and dogs walk by just feet away from your
dog, may be stressful for both of you. Your
dog may not be able to get adequate rest,
or the activity may even overstimulate
him, causing him to either shut down or
lose focus when it's his turn to perform.
During crowded events in busy arenas it
may be best for you to crate out of your
vehicle. By choosing to crate outside the
arena, you allow the dog to be in his own
space where he is comfortable-a place
where he can rest. When crating out of
a car, make sure there is enough shade
and ventilation in summer, and enough
warmth in winter. Clean Run sells a variety of crate fans, shade cloths, cooling

Once you know the dog will be comfortable, not over-stimulated, and able to
rest, there is still the issue of the amount
of time the dog spends in his crate during a competition. By knowing the details
of the show site before entering, you are
aware of places you can walk, warm up,
cool down, and just hang out with your
dog. If you've never been to this location,
ask friends, instructors or even the trial
secretary these questions:
*	 Are the grounds large enough for
taking long walks?
*	 Are there large pastures for off-leash
running, trails, or other exercise
options?
*	 Where are the potty areas?
*	 How far away is the vehicle parking
from the arena?
*	 Is there natural shade (trees) or will
I need to bring my own?
If the competition is in a building with no
areas to walk, warm up, and cool down
except by a crowded practice jump next to
the ring, you can plan ahead if you know
this information. If the only potty area a
10ft. x 10ft. run filled with urine-soaked
sawdust, what will you do?
If you and your dog are not able to escape
the sounds, sites, and smells of competition, you can expect pressure to creep
in. This pressure can build up over the
course of a weekend and keep building
over multiple weekends. If the dog starts
to feel overwhelmed weekend after weekend of competing, he will soon figure out
that competitions are not very enjoyable,
and it will show in his ring performance.

By entering competitions at show sites
that allow time away from the rings with
your dog, your dog will feel less pressure
to be alert, defensive, or always "on." By
choosing show sites where your dog has
some down time and is able to relax and
recharge, you're allowing him to make the
choice to fully connect with you.
Just as it is a good idea for you to pack a
personal bag, it is important that a bag is
packed for the dog. Choose snacks and
treats that help the dog maintain energy
throughout the weekend, as well as toys
the dog loves, poo bags, a proper coat,
bedding for his crate, a competition lead
or harness that allows easy transitions
into and out of the ring. Depending on
the weather, you may want towels to wipe
off dirt or mud, spray bottles to cool feet
and abdomens, water bowls, a comb, toenail trimmers, vet wrap, etc. Being caught
without an important tool places undue
pressure on you while you scramble to
find and borrow the item.
I once went to a competition and my dog
knocked the first four bars in his first run.
I was worried about his well-being, so we
left the ring to see if he was injured. I ended
up finding a knot in his tail that was connected to a knot in his pants, restricting his
movement. I did not have the proper tools
to remove the tangles, which put pressure
on me to locate a comb and/or scissors before our next run. I was a little worked up
by the time the knots were removed and
felt the time crunch for my next run. Had
I had the tools in my bag I would have
been able to calmly remove the tangles
and keep the situation within my control,
keeping pressure and stress levels down.
