Handlers who had fallen behind their
dogs on the long run to the #8 tunnel
tended to still be behind their dogs
which pulled the dogs into them before they started the serpentine. Some
handlers then tried to push in too
much, which pushed the dogs over the
off-course #13 jump into the wrong
end of the tunnel as shown in Figure 5.
The most successful way to handle this
section of the course seemed to be to
balance the dog's obstacle and handler
focus and keep him driving in obstacle
focus until the start of the serpentine.
Then the handler could rear cross the
#12 tunnel which set them up positionally very well for the tight turn to the
#13 jump as shown in Figure 6.

The ending was handled in two different ways. The most common mistake
was an off-course from the #12 tunnel
to the finish jump as shown in Figure 7.
This occurred if the handlers didn't either recognize the potential draw of
the finish jump with the timer eyes and
failed to call their dog, or if the handler
was too late and the dog was already
committed. The other mistake handlers made was missing the #16 jump
because they were on the right side of
#14 trying to pull their dogs. The handlers who were on the outside of the
final line had a harder time getting
to the last jump cleanly because they
were stuck behind the wing of #16. The
most successful way to handle the back
line was to send out to #14 and front

cross after #15. This allowed the dogs
to straighten the line to #17 without
the handler getting stuck. You can see
this in Figure 8.
I enjoyed judging this course. I felt that
the challenges were appropriate for the
highest level of CPE without being too
difficult for the truly novice dogs who
started in Level 3. That is one of the challenges about designing the CPE games
courses, Level 3 runs with Levels 4,5C so
there is a very wide range of experience
among the dogs. The Q rate was very
successful, over 60%, and it was split
evenly among the small and tall dogs as
well as the Level 3 and 4,5C dogs. Overall this course ran well and it had places
for the handlers to make choices which
allowed dogs to really run. D
