Collar Cues

The use of the leash for the actual training of behavior is a rarity in positive reinforcement programs, mostly due to
the historical association to traditional
ways of training with a leash being punishment based (i.e., correction, compulsion methods). Commonly, positive reinforcement trainers are either working
with an unleashed dog or the leash is
used only for safety/management. Why
not make use of this leash connection
with our dogs, take it a step beyond a
management instrument, and make it a
positive training tool?
The goal behavior of collar cue response is for the puppy or dog to move
happily in the direction indicated by
light pressure cues felt through the
leash. A collar cue is simply an additional communication tool between
handler and dog that can be used in a
variety of scenarios.

well as the first two stages of the training process. This month I'll cover the
final steps of training.

4. The dog is responding solely to the
applied collar cue, not cuing off
your body movements.

Step 3: Extending Handler Applied
Directional Collar Cues and Handler in Motion Collar Cues

If the dog is consistently performing the
above four behaviors, congratulations!
You have successfully trained the most
difficult part of collar cue behavior (isolating the light body contact cue).

The following are prerequisite behaviors for progressing to Step 3:
1. With you remaining stationary, the
dog is easily cued with light collar
cues in four different directions
(forward, backward, sideways right,
sideways left).
2. The amount of pressure has progressed to very light contact directional cues. You can imagine using
a string as a leash connection and
having the same responses.
3. The dog visibly enjoys the collar
cue game, responds immediately to
each cue, and perceives light collar
cues as opportunities for reward.

training of collar cue behavior.
Moving the Dog Farther by Extending the Directional Collar Cue
So far, these light contact cues have
been of brief duration, only asking the
dog to move in the cued direction a
foot or two in distance. Now the dog is
ready for you to extend the cues, asking the dog to move farther. This means
keeping the directional contact cue active longer before click/reward.
