layouts. The main requirements are that
the team must have a clearly defined
obstacle (such as the A-frame) that they
must go around, giving them a clear
route to take without cutting across the
field early, and there must be are a reasonable number of potential off-courses
and side changes so that handling cannot be ignored. By strategic placement
and orientation of jumps, sections can
be set to encourage distance handling,
particularly lateral sends. To demonstrate where the handler should be relative to the dog in sequences where distance work is possible, surveyor's tape
can be used to establish a containment
line as the team learns to work apart.
By not allowing performance of weaves
or contact obstacles, students can focus
on directing the dog through a course of
their choice using only the "easy" obstacles (jumps, tire), which allows them
to focus on their handling and not on
obstacle performance by their dog. As

with a titling event, the same course can
be used in all levels of classes by asking
the students to complete an escalating
number of obstacles.
To demonstrate the effects of various
handling techniques on how the dog
will respond to handler motion and
cues, I have students run the course as
they choose, and then rerun it with different handling at selected locations. As
with the course presented here, there
are often multiple ways to pass through
portions of a course, each with its own
pitfalls and challenges; I therefore have
required students to get different obstacles in their reruns so that they are faced
with these learning opportunities. Since
this game gets students attuned to their
handling cues, I have them watch each
other and explain how the handler's
actions impacted the dog's motion and
path along their route. I also ask them
what they might do differently to avoid
the same situations. D
