Training Freedom:
HERE I go agaIn!

January in the U.K. is all about rain. High
winds and rain. Did I mention the rain?
Waterlogged paddocks, soggy dogs, and
miserable horses that have spent too
much time in their stables. All the routes
out of the cottage involve crossing fields
which in this weather means slogging
your way through thick clay. None of the
dogs enjoy it, and neither do I! Shady is
now a pro at standing still to have his legs
hosed because if the clay isn't rinsed off,
it forms heavy clumps between his pads.
Even poor Darcey (Whippet), who hates
being wet with a passion, has learned to
have her feet washed. The cottage is filled
with damp dog towels on every available
radiator, and we're all looking forward to
spring.
with fitness levels, but I like to maintain
fitness in other ways. We usually walk
around our fields three times a day, and
three times a week I drive them out for
an hour walk to give free exercise with
more mental stimulation. An injury is a
worry at the back of my mind, and I watch
them all like a hawk for any signs of irregularity in their gait, which is the first
sign of injury. We're all looking forward
to spring when the ground will dry out,
and we can go back to our daily walks.
Without free exercise off of our property,
the dogs need a lot more mental stimulation. For Shady this is accomplished by
tracking and search squares, for Tyzer it
means endless games of "find your toy
hidden somewhere in the 8 acres of horse
paddocks" and asking him for all sorts of
help around the yard-he goes and collects horse buckets and head collars when
asked to do so. For the rest of the dogs, we
play "find your scattered dinner" and all
sorts of find-the-named toy games.
In this weather, I decided that it wasn't
worth upsetting Darcey and trying to
train her when she's unhappy outside. She
hates being cold and especially hates being wet. Given her lack of working drive,
I don't want to associate agility equipment
with being cold and miserable. I have carried on with her paw targets and bit and
pieces of self-control work, but in the
main Darcey has been given a couple of
months off. I'll try again with her when
spring arrives, and it (hopefully!) stops
raining. It is interesting that if the dogs
start a game of chase in the ménage, she
does take the jumps in her way and will
happily chase Tyzer through tunnels, so
I'm hoping that when the weather cheers
up, she'll be ready to start training again.
To maintain fitness, we have reintroduced cavalettis and are working balance
games three times a week. To a certain
extent, the agility training they do helps
Shady has got the idea of the agility game.
He's having fun and starting to push
and drive forward. On straight lines,
he's looking where he's going and is now

only checking in with me when there's
a decision to be made or if I get too far
behind! His confidence has increased,
and he's now happy to drive ahead of me
to any tunnel. Next on the list is to teach
him about offset jumps. I'm not a fan of
micro-management, and if I indicate a
straight line, I expect my dogs to be able
to find that line. So I will now go back to
sendaway work, but with the jumps offset.
The speed circles have accustomed
Shade to lateral distance we now need to
fine tune this a little. If jumps are slightly
out of line and angled towards me, he
takes them naturally. It's jumps that are
offset away from me that he struggles
with. As well as the straight-forward
sends, I'm also going to continue with our
circle, placing a toy behind the offset jump
until he learns to look for a line through
jumps.
Dexi (small cross-breed) enjoys this but
still watches me carefully. I suspect that
it will take a lot more training before he's
happy to drive forward without checking in, if he's ever happy to do so. Either
way, the circles have enabled him to extend and have some fun, and attempting
to run ahead of him is good for my fitness levels. His confidence is increasing,
and he no longer worries about making
mistakes. My records show that it's been
seven weeks since he last ran away and hid
