MY FAVORITE
JUMPING
Imagine that you are preparing for a big event
but your agility equipment has vanished!
All you have are two or three jumps. We asked
top-level trainers from all over the country about
what they would do under these circumstances.
The exercises they offer are sequences you can
do even if you have limited space and obstacles.

In the not-too-distant past, if you played only AKC agility,
you never had to worry about asking your dog to perform
a backside jump. The Premier class has changed that though,
and today, across the major organizations, it pays to know
how to execute the different types of backside sends. I use
the setup in Figure 1 to practice S-turns and O-turns to
move my dog around a backside. The S-turn is so named because it traces the dog's path around a jump. The O-turn is a
360-degree wrap around the wing.
S-turn: Lead out to the black handler's position in
Figure 2, leaving the right wing of #2 visible to the dog.
Release the dog and use your right arm to send him to the
backside. Look into his eyes and show him the line, from
takeoff to landing, by opening up your right shoulder and
looking to his landing spot while simultaneously sliding

O-turn: Lead out to the black handler's position in
Figure 3. Remember not to block the wing. As your dog
approaches, rotate and send him to the backside with your
left arm. As he commits to the jump, open your shoulders
and look at his landing spot as you slide around the wing.
Especially in the beginning, you can use your right arm to
help "pull" him over the jump. On your way to #3, alternate
picking up the dog on your right side as shown, and doing a
blind cross to pick him up on your left.

around the left wing (green handler). Stay out of his way as
he jumps! Your goal is to be around the left wing and on
your way to jump #3, as shown by the blue handler, before
he lands. On your way to #3, alternate picking up the dog
on your right side, and doing a blind cross to pick him up
on your left. Incrementally add distance to the send.
