For a teaching moment to occur, you as the apprentice need to go to the mentor and say, “I need help,” and be willing to listen. My father picked me up from school three days a week and took me to the range. He became my ﬁrst coach. But he did much more than just coach me; he became a mentor to me as well. I have had instructors since my father that were capable and caring, but none that I could completely conﬁde in. That’s mentorship and it is special. Mental Management new products from Creating Motivation How does the mentor motivate the apprentice to change? I think there are three primary ways to motivate people: • If you can create a situation where those being mentored are moving toward something that really excites them or that they receive a beneﬁt from, especially if there is an emotional beneﬁt attached to it, then you can motivate them. I was excited by riﬂe shooting when I discovered it. • You can also motivate people by moving them away from something that is unpleasant or that they don’t want to do. Have you ever been sick and tired of being sick and tired? I was sick and tired of being the last person picked on every sport team. I wanted to be ﬁrst in something. Fortunately, I found something that I could do well and through hard work I became the best in the world at it. • Perhaps the best way to motivate people is by setting an example that they want to follow. Having someone that I looked up to certainly was a motivator for me. I got a chance to meet Olympic gold medalists while still in middle school. In addition, my father was a great example to me as a coach. My father turned out to be a very good coach and it became his profession. He progressed in the Army’s coaching system, eventually becoming the coach of the Army team in the service riﬂe division at Fort Benning at the United States Marksmanship Unit. He served there for several years before he retired from the military. It was that unit that I later went to after I graduated from college, and I’ve had two sons that have been assigned to that unit. My son Troy spent 7 years there and was 12-time national champion and world champion, so we owe a lot to the United States Marksmanship Unit. My father was also very interested in my coaching efforts and was a great asset to me while I was struggling with some of the issues of coaching. It was wonderful to have my dad to mentor me in his retirement years. I lost my dad several years ago, but I learned so much from him that I feel like he is always with me. And that is really the mentoring experience. In the next article we will look at how you can improve your chances of having a mentoring experience.
