flying circle start Some dogs like to start while you’re both moving. This is often true for dogs where you want more speed from them. The problem with this start is you are often left behind, so you miss out on the important head start you get with a lead-out. But all this can be remedied by finding a flow and trying to get ahead before the first jump, and also by paying attention to how your own movement affects your dog, just as you would in the middle of a course. Your path has to match your dog’s path and have the correct influence on it. On the start line, you don’t always have to begin straight in front of the first obstacle, but instead figure out which angle will benefit your start the most. often it’s good to be a bit ahead of your dog, and that is possible if you make sure to move into the course before your dog has had a chance to pass you. To do that, you must be able to rely on your dog’s knowing his cues to run ahead. To get a good flying circle start, you need to have done the foundation work so that your dog wants to follow when you move (CR may 2009, regular turns). Try to turn in a circle before the first obstacle at such an angle that your line of travel affects the dog in the correct way. You also need to let your dog take the jump independently so you can use your time to move ahead instead of helping him take the first obstacle. Flying Circle Start a B C D e F I often use flying circle starts when training the dog to correctly approach a sequence that can be run as though part of a course. When I want to focus on a particular part of a course and run it many times, I don’t want to leave my dog in a stay each time, partly because it takes a lot of time and partly because I want us to get into the flow of running like an actual course might run.
