TEACHING FOCUS AND IMPULSE-CONTROL CLASSES

By now students are used to the setup and pre-class routine and things should go fairly smoothly as they prepare for class to begin. We recommend that students bring in their crates and gear to set up ﬁrst, then bring in their dogs (as long as it’s not too hot to leave dogs in the car for a few minutes). If they can’t leave their dogs in the car we ask them to bring in the dog ﬁrst and give it to one of us to hold while they set up their station. We don’t want our students to be distracted while lugging all their “stuff” and unable to focus on what their dogs are doing as they enter the building. This goes back to the concept that we need to give our dogs 100% of our focus when we are working with them. Once students have their stations set up and their dogs ready to go we instruct them to automatically begin working on offered focus as a warm-up exercise for the class.

Set up your training station before you bring in your dog.

We start by simply walking up behind the dog while the trainer is working on offered focus. It is expected that the dog will notice us and look in our direction. Though on occasion some dogs just give an ear ﬂick in our direction and keep on working. That response should be highly reinforced. But if the dog looks to us we simply stop all movement and do not make eye contact. We instruct students to wait until the dog looks back toward them to click. If the dog does not offer to reconnect in about 3 seconds we lower the distraction level by moving farther away. Students typically want to do something to gain their dogs’ attention and we gently remind them to wait for the behavior they want. This is crucial for the success of this exercise. The dog needs to voluntarily choose to focus, not be compelled in any way by the trainer. As the instructor you want to be sure you are adding the right level of distraction for each dog. In this exercise the distraction level can be raised or lowered by moving in closer toward the dog or staying out at a distance. Be sure the distraction is not too overwhelming in the beginning. You want the dog to notice the distraction, but not be intensely interested in it. It’s important to build up challenges slowly based on success at each level.
