Building Hands-on Conﬁdence and Control

I have mentioned in previous articles that I view my hand as being equal to the clip of my leash and my arms as equivalent to a leash. When my hand is placed in my dog’s collar I expect him to respond in the same manner he would on a leash. It is my goal to be able to hold and maneuver my dog without him struggling. For example, when I put my dog on a leash I do not expect him to throw himself to the ground and refuse to move, or to twist himself into a pretzel to free himself from the leash. However, when many dogs are maneuvered by the collar, this is the type of response that ensues. If you were holding your dog on a leash and he was struggling to get away, it is unlikely you would let go of the leash or unclip the leash and let the dog go free. But many owners will let go of their dog if he fusses while they are holding him by the collar. My hand in my dog’s collar is a nonverbal form of communication with my dog, and results in a calm and relaxed response from him.
