FRONT CROSSES

Some of them focus on where the handler should be while performing the front cross, some focus on the handling skills necessary for the front cross. This article will focus on footwork for various types of front crosses. Every sport has some kind of footwork, agility included. Unfortunately, footwork is not given very much attention. Footwork for front crosses is very important. Proper footwork for a front cross can get you through a course more fluidly, with fewer steps, and even take a few seconds off your time. Proper footwork can also better cue your dog for the next obstacle. Most importantly, good footwork can prevent injury. Unfortunately, knee injuries are increasingly common in agility, but can sometimes be prevented by improving footwork. A few things can go wrong when doing a front cross. The most common mis60

takes are 1) over-rotation; and 2) the handler becoming off balance, then having to push off the heel of her foot. There is a simple, yet not so simple fix. We are just not used to doing the footwork, so it will take some practice. Figure 1 shows a lateral motion front cross. Here you need to move laterally to the right before the dog takes off for jump #2. When you reach the point at which you want to make your front cross at jump #3, you must change the direction you are running or you will end up off balance and pushing off your heels. When you get to your front cross point, you needs to take one small step 90° “toward” jump #3. You should plant your right foot, shown here by the green handler, parallel to jump #3, landing on the ball of your foot. Foot placement is critical no matter how you do your front cross. All your weight will be on your right foot. Planting your foot parallel to jump #3

and landing on the ball of your foot will allow you to get a much more powerful push off, which will allow you to maximize the body weight transfer you will get through to your next step (better acceleration).
