jump-rather than as a lure (i.e., throwing the toy over the jump and the dog
taking the jump because he is chasing the
toy). There is a time and place for luring
in training, but when working on independent obstacle performance, we want
to reward commitment to the obstacle.
Likewise, if you are training handling
moves such as wing wraps, the placement
of the delivery of the reward can assist in
shaping the dog's performance.

From my observation, the more a handler pulls their dog out of the weave
poles, the more the dog expects this, and
they become increasingly observant of
their handler whilst weaving. In some
cases, this becomes so extreme that a
handler can't move their hands or leave
the line of the weaves without the dog
reading it as a cue to pop out of the
weave poles.
weave performance by starting to add in
distractions incrementally: move laterally
away from the weave pole line whilst your
dog is weaving, practice weaving with you
behind and you ahead. Be imaginative;
you can challenge your dog with things
over and above those that he may find
at an agility competition: people waving,
toys on the floor, etc. Just remember to
add challenges incrementally-don't make
it so complicated that it is impossible for
your dog to get it right.
The Fix
When using the toy as a reward, it is
thrown into the reward zone once the
dog is committed to taking the jump.
Sin 5: Pulling the dog out of the weaves
if he enters incorrectly or misses a pole.
Why is this an agility sin? Because you
are showing your dog that it is okay to
pop out of the weave poles.
Ok, let's think about the reasons why you
might be tempted to call your dog out of
weave poles:
* Your dog misses the weave entry (that's
a training issue).
* The weaves are an off-course obstacle.
So, if your dog has entered the weave,
it is because it thought your handling
supported the decision that the weaves
were the next obstacle (handling error)
or your dog is hugely weave-focused
(training issue).
It is vital that we are honest with ourselves about our dog's actual skill level.
Are we asking the dog to perform a task
that is beyond his current capability?
Are we increasing the difficulty of the
exercise to a level higher than the dog is
capable of performing at his current stage
in training? At all times, we want to protect our dog's confidence in his ability to
weave and only introduce challenges in

When things go wrong in the weave poles,
allow your dog to continue weaving to
the end of the poles, but do not reward.
Give your dog a short five-second break,
a moment to appreciate that all did not
go as it should have. It is essential for the
dog to realize that it is not continuing to
sequence, as for many dogs that would
be considered as rewarding the behavior.
Whilst we always train for success, we
shouldn't be afraid of failure as it is part
of learning. What is important is that we
know how to deal with failure to turn it
into a productive part of learning. So, we
are letting the dog know he failed, and he
is not getting a reward as his performance
wasn't correct. Take your dog back to the
original entry line he was working for the
weaves and ask him to attempt the weaves
again. In general, I don't want more than
two failures in a row as I like to keep the
dog's enthusiasm and confidence.
All dogs are different, so it is important to be aware of your dog's stress or
frustration level. Weaving is also strenuous for the dog's body. When teaching
weaves, I prefer to work students on just
four poles initially, building the dog's
understanding of difficult weave entries
right from the outset.
My goal is for the dog to be confident that
he should weave every pole in front of
him-once the dog is in the weave poles,
he should keep weaving until he gets to
the end. We want independent obstacle
performance. If you move away from the
poles, you are showing your dog the direction he will be going after completing
the weaves, not giving him a cue to leave
the weave poles. Whatever the distraction
we want the dog to continue weaving.
So once your dog is confident and fast in
his weaving, you can begin to proof his
Proofing independent weaving with the
distraction of toys and treats.
Sin 6: Letting the dog step back into his
stopped contact position if he breaks.
Why is this an agility sin? Unintentionally many students create a behavior
chain in which the dog leaps over the
contact and then either steps back on to
the contact or is told to get back into his
contact position by the handler and then
gets rewarded for achieving the contact
criteria. Very quickly dogs learn a "leap
and cheat" contact.
Dogs repeat what is rewarding. Also, we
want the contact criteria to be performed
first time, not on the second attempt.
The leap and cheat behavior usually
derives initially from either the dog misinterpreting the release (just as with
start-line stays), or from a reluctance to
perform his contact criteria as the dog
just wants to continue running and doing
agility equipment, resulting in a missed
contact to which the handler responds by
taking the dog back and repositioning the
dog on the contact, and then rewarding.
