BEHN/PET PERSONALITIES 7 This month's setup was inspired by an AKC
Excellent JWW course 17 4 I ran in competition at a local trial attended
by many of my 1 1 students. Don Skibniewski designed and judged the course
seen in 3 12 10 Figure 1. The course included a very technically difficult
opening, a formidable weave entrance, and other handling challenges. 6 1
11 2 Many students had problems with the course in competition, so 1 19 5
I adapted it for use in my Masters, Advanced, and Novice classes, 18
giving them a do-over opportunity. 20 1 Advanced/Masters Level 1 1 Figure
2 shows the course that was used in both Masters and AKC Excellent JWW
Advanced classes. The students walked the course and then ran it, Canaan
Dog Club of America April 23, 2006 receiving individual critiques during
and after their runs. The first Judge: Donald Skibniewski handling
challenge occurred after jump #3. All students handled 1 jumps #1 to #3
with a lead-out pivot or push from jump #2 to #3, or with the dog on the
right, handling the straight line between jump #1 and #3. Most handlers
executed a false turn from jump 15 #3 to jump #4 to avoid the off-course
at jump #13. 14 The next handling challenge was the sequence preceding the
weave poles. Students varied in their handling of jumps #6 to #8. Most
students found success handling jumps #5 to #8 with the 9 8 dog on their
right and doing a rear cross at the #8 triple that took 13 the dog into
the #9 weave poles. A few students executed a front cross from jump #6 to
the #7 double, which had varied success. Many students found that the dog
was on an incorrect line after 7 4 16 the cross and could not recover to
take the triple, either missing the triple by running to the right of it
or knocking the bar of the 12 3 double or the triple. A few students with
smaller dogs executed the 10 front cross from #6 to #7 successfully. Their
success was probably 20 2 6 11 due to the smaller dogs having more striding
room between the 5 18 two jumps, which allowed them to readjust the line to
the triple 17 19 more easily than longer striding dogs. The weave entrance
was the next challenge. Unlike the inspiration 1 course, the course used
in class had a big draw to the dog's focus T after the triple, the
A-frame. Students who did not manage the Masters/Advanced JWW course entry
or got a wider turn, lost the dog to the pull of the A-frame. 2 After the
weave poles, students generally sent the dog, off the left side, to jump
#10 while they moved laterally to jumps #11 and or even into the exit end
of the #15 tunnel due to the handler's #12. A few students handled
obstacles #13 to #15 as a serpentine, acceleration to the front-cross
position, resulting in a wide turn to keeping the dog on the left while
they remained on the takeoff side #13 or even an off-course into the
tunnel. Students handled jumps of jump #13. This was a very good choice
because it encouraged #16 and #17 with the dog on their right by executing
a landing- the dog to stay tighter to jump #13 and not go wide toward the
side front cross from jump #17 to #18 or a rear cross at #18 to the
tunnel. Many students executed a front cross from jump #13 to #19 tunnel.
The students in all four Masters and Advanced classes #14 with mixed
