LB: How did you choose Auggie? LC: We were looking for a big black Lab. She was little, but she was the only black dog we saw. We thought she was a threemonth-old Lab, but she turned out to be a six-month-old black mixed breed. We call her our “Mini Lab,” since she looks like a little Lab with flying nun ears. She had been at the shelter for a couple of months after being found at a construction site. LB: How did you get started in agility? run through the distractions. A green dog does “green dog things.” If I had known this, I never would have tried to control her by slowing her down. I would have continued to trial and work at getting out my cues faster and directing her more efficiently. My goal would have been to make my fast dog run faster. I worked so hard to calm Auggie down that she lost a great deal of her speed and motivation. What a mistake that was. I worked really hard to get her to be relaxed and serene on the start line. I didn’t realize at the time that a dog needs to be eager on the start line. I just didn’t understand our sport at the beginning. I also slowed her down by doing lots of ambiguous rear crosses. Poor Auggie didn’t know where she was supposed to go! Eventually, I realized I needed to speed her up again. I used tennis balls and really great food in training. My little black dog was looking for something to chase and something to eat. At trials we played the dragon game. I made noises and loomed over her like a crazy person. She loved it. Auggie and I would play all these crazy games, and the Border Collies would sit patiently with their handlers. It was embarrassing but worth it. Early in her Masters career, I stopped trusting her to know what to do. I shaped her weave pole entries and her approaches to obstacle discriminations, with the result that she missed most of them. In fact, she didn’t hit a weave pole entry on the first try for 14 months. Finally, a friend suggested that I let Auggie make the entry. I realized I was standing in the way of my dog’s success because I didn’t trust her to do what I had trained her to do. Auggie didn’t want me in her face. I learned that she could handle weave entrances and discriminations without my intervention. When I let Auggie do her job, she just did it. I think this is a lesson that many people need to learn. We shouldn’t micromanage our dogs. LB: Your favorite agility moments with Auggie? LC: After taking several obedience classes each week for a year, Auggie was still out of control around other dogs, walking on a leash, and doing any obedience. She was so high-strung that it was nearly impossible to take her out of the house. She was uncomfortable around people, anxious outside of the house. Someone suggested that we take her to agility to help her focus. She was pretty nuts. At the first agility lesson, someone suggested that we try obedience first. LB: What made Auggie easy to train? Auggie By Lisa Barrett Photos by Active Dog Photography Call Name: LC: Training Auggie was never difficult because she turned out to be a forgiving and steady dog. Auggie is also a natural athlete. She is a beautiful, effortless jumper and she flows around the course. She has a lot of “carry,” meaning she really extends when she jumps. She just loves to run courses, whether she is chasing me or running ahead of me. She is a go-on dog and hates tight turns. I think she would keep doing jumps forever if I just kept running and telling her Go On. LB: What were the challenges? Auggie Titles Earned: ADCH, JCH-Bronze, SCH-Bronze, SACH, GCH, RCH, NATCH, ATCH, AJD, ASD, AKD Cherokee County Animal Shelter, Canton, Georgia Lois Cook Handler: Adopted From: LC: Her biggest challenges were trial distractions. My challenges were finding the right speed and learning to trust my dog. At first, trialing was a huge challenge because of all the distractions. Auggie was a high-spirited young dog. She flew off contacts and left the ring to jump on other dogs, visit with friends, and get food. She would stop on course to root around in the dirt with her nose and make pig noises. We called her the hoggie doggie. I don’t think I have ever seen a dog have so much fun. What I didn’t know then was the wisdom of training for the long run. I didn’t realize that with experience a dog learns to 28 LC: Running our victory lap when we got our NATCH. All of our friends were cheering us on after a perfect Chances run.
