I don’t want my dog to run straight lines; I use this method to find the straightest path between obstacles, so the lines and turns on the course can be identified. The red lines represent the dog’s path. These nice curvy lines are more what I want my actual course to look like. A curved line also shows where the inside and outside of the course “circles” are. I have placed the handler on the inside of each arc on the course. By moving to the inside of an arc you are usually taking the shortest path. These lines/arcs are hypothetical. You might choose to push/serpentine a line and so take away the indicated handler side shown on this diagram. Reading the Course Map Look at the overall course “picture” to determine if the course is wide open or has lots of sharp turns, has harsh or soft angles between obstacles, and is relatively long or short. Use your finger to follow the path; see if turning the map around is helpful while you look at the obstacles from the direction you will take them. Identify any basic patterns on the course like 180s, 270s, pinwheels, large arcs, and long straight lines. Draw a straight line from obstacle to obstacle and end each line at the spot your dog will complete performance of the obstacle as shown in Figure 1. Use a pencil or just follow the straight lines with your finger. Find any trap that falls in a direct line with the dog’s path. Notice the obstacles that are totally logical and are on a reasonably straight path from the previous obstacle. Identify your lead-out position. Your first course position is extremely important. If you are consistent with your lead-out position and movements, your dog will know where he is going as he executes the first obstacles. Locate all of the dog’s changes of direction by finding the intersection of your straight lines. Finding the turns and deciding how to indicate them to your dog is the most important task of your analysis. Find the changes of side. Most often when we run courses, we are on the inside of the arc the dog is taking; the dog usually takes the longer path and we take the shorter path as in Figures 2 and 3. You have already identified the dog’s direction changes with your straight lines, now you can plan your side changes.
