Everything you always wanted to know about agility By Brenna Fender ? My 5-lb. dog is fast and his short coat perfectly matches the color of the dirt at the average inside trial in my area. One NADAC judge suggested I paint my dog with stripes so she could easily see him on course. Was she joking, or is there a rule that allows painted dogs? According to NADAC representative Becky Woodruff, yes, the judge must have been joking. A NADAC judge would not seriously request a change in the color of your dog’s coat. But color alterations are allowed at NADAC trials if the owner desires to do some decorating: “We don’t have any huge restrictions on putting some coloring on dogs. At our Championships each year, we see quite a few dogs with glitter on them or some purple here and there. For St. Patrick’s Day, folks sometimes paint bits of green on their dogs. If it is done in fun and good taste and in no way impedes the performance of the dog, then it is allowed,” says Woodruff. Agility organizations differ widely about allowing dog decoration. • Agility Association of Canada: The question is not addressed in the rule book, but dyed dogs have competed at many AAC trials, including the Nationals. • American Kennel Club: Dogs may not run with their coat color altered in any way. Although not mentioned in the AKC agility rules, this topic is addressed in the Rules Applying to Dog Shows, Chapter 11, Section 8C. • Australian Shepherd Club of America: There is no rule against fur paint or dye (although spokesperson Allison Bryant says she’s never seen any dog with it). • Canine Performance Events: Anything that could fall off the dog during a run would not be allowed, including paint flecks and glitter. Coloring with dye is allowed and has been used, particularly around holidays like Halloween. • Teacup Dog Agility Association: Paint and other types of decoration may be allowed at TDAA events. September 09 | Clean Run 7 Do you have a question about agility rules or anything else agility related? Mail your questions to Brenna Fender: brennafender@gmail.com Brenna collects the questions and forwards them to us so we never see the names. “Dogs can run in anything including coats and collars as long as it does not create a safety hazard for the dog,” according to spokesperson Cheryl Huffman. The judge at the trial is responsible for determining if the decoration or other additions are safe. • United Kennel Club: According to a representative, the UKC agility rules provide that an exhibitor’s dog must be clean and present a neat appearance. A dog with paint, glitter, dye, or similar substances would present an appearance contrary to UKC’s philosophy of the sport of agility, and is also in opposition to Section XIII of the exhibitor’s guidelines. • United States Dog Agility Association: President Kenneth Tatsch says, “We have no rules against hair treatments. Anything the judge deems to be detrimental to the safety of the dog, that might be some form of marketing, or that might exhibit poor sportsmanship would be disallowed.” Do not expect to run a costumed dog (or even a sweatered one) at most events. Concerns about safety are the main reason for restrictions. If you have questions about what is allowed, you can ask the judge on the day of the trial. D
