Distance

When a dog is ﬁrst taught to perform a jump, the handler must be right next to him to encourage him through
the stanchions. As the dog gains conﬁdence, the handler is able to move farther away and the dog will still
perform the jump. The dog’s “comfort zone” or “natural working distance” is the distance between him and
the handler where the dog will perform the jump without either going around the outside of it or pulling off it
toward the handler. For some dogs the comfort zone is 2' and for others it is 10'. Although dogs naturally gain
some distance from the handler when their conﬁdence increases, training is required to get the dog to work
beyond his comfort zone.
Distance must be taught as a separate
skill, just like contact performances or
rear crosses. Gaining distance is a gradual process that is trained over many sessions. In addition, independent obstacle
performance is required before the dog
can navigate obstacles at a distance. My
articles in the April through July 2013 issues of CR featured methods for teaching independent obstacle performance.
This article explains the steps for teaching both lateral and forward distance,
and provides exercises to increase your
dog’s distance incrementally.
