Make sure the approach or up side of the teeter (the end of the plank that rests on the ground) is placed on the 24" table. The board should rest centered on the tables, overlapping the edge of each table by about 2". This gives the dog room to stand on both tables. Step 1 Have your dog jump off the short table and walk him back to the tall table; you can tug with him as you walk back. Ask the dog to jump on the tall table and traverse the board again. Repeat this process until your dog can walk, and then run, across the tipping board on both your right and left side. Make sure the dog is not jumping off the board, but rather running across the entire board. If he jumps to the table too soon, he is either in a hurry to get his reward or avoiding the tip. Either way, this must be fixed. For the next session, reward the dog on the board a couple times in the yellow for making contact with the board. Don’t worry about slowing the dog down at this point; rather think about getting him to want to stay in contact with the board and not leap off too early. Go back to rewarding on the table once the dog is moving through the yellow toward the end of the board and not rushing the exit onto the table. In all the training stages that follow, if your dog is taking an early exit to the table, fix it before moving on to the next step. Step 2 24"24" table table 20" table 20" table An adjustable teeter makes this process easier because you can get better control of how much tip An adjustable teeterteeter. you have on the makes this Ask your dog get on the tall table. Walking next to the dog, have him walk across the teeter toward the short table. Reward him along the way with cookies just for being on the board, and reward him with a game of tug or a food reward when he reaches the short table. Your end performance at this stage is simply for the dog to stop with four paws on the short table. Do not ask or train a position (for example, two-on/two-off or four on the board) at this stage. Note: If I want to tug with a dog that has a softer mouth or one that doesn’t enjoy tugging, I use a Greenie or a bully stick. I have even used a chicken wing in a sock with a friend’s Sheltie—boy, did he tug for that! If the dog jumps off the teeter, it’s no big deal at this stage. On the next repetition, praise him just before where he jumped off and place the reward just inches past where you praised. This gets him to focus just past where he jumped off before. When he chooses to start moving forward again, reward him and then ask him to jump off. It is very important the dog knows he can jump off. Don’t reward the jump with a treat or toy, but do praise it—a dog bailing off is information that he is not comfortable with the process. The next time you ask the dog to go across the board, see if he will go a little farther, reward him, and then ask him to jump off. You want to ask him to jump off before he becomes uncomfortable. Have him go a littler farther the next time, and so on. The goal is to ask for progress and not just reward the dog that just wants to bail each time. It’s a fine balance between wanting the dog to be confident and rewarding the jumping off too often. Asking the dog to jump off once or twice usually does the trick. Quickly your dog will be going across the board willingly and with speed. process easier because you can get better control of how much tip you have on the teeter. 24" table 24" table 20" table 20" table Starting at the 24" table, walk beside the dog toward the 20" table.
