Step 4 24" table 24" table 20" table 20" table both your right and left side. Then work on a recall from the tall table to the short table and a send from the short table to the tall table. You want to give rewards for speed during this phase. If your dog does two of the same performances with accuracy and speed, ask for more speed. Remember, more speed may just be a little more; don’t expect giant leaps in speed. At this stage when you see a burst of speed, you don’t want to wait for the dog to get to the table to reward him. Rather, you want to give an immediate reward on the board. Do this several times and then go back to rewarding on the table until you get another increase in speed. At this point, reverse direction and do several repetitions going from the tall table to the short table. Often you’ll find that your dog now has more confidence going from the tall to the short table than he did before. This is a natural progression. Send the dog to the lower table Send the dog to the lower table. When your dog is confidently crossing the board from the tall to the short table, it’s time to start on the short table and go to the tall table. This is the first time that your dog sees a board that rises up and then drops. Don’t be surprised if he is a bit tentative at the beginning. This picture is different from the one he is used to seeing. Ask your dog to jump on the short table. Reward him for getting on the board and then for going across the board to the tall table. (Don’t be worried if your dog walks initially; he will get faster when he is more confident.) Have your dog jump off the tall table and walk him back to the short table; you can tug with him as you walk back. Ask the dog to jump on the short table and traverse the board again. Repeat this process until your dog can run across the tipping board on puppy pRepARATIon When my dog is a puppy, I acclimate him to motion on a tippy board (looks like a miniature teeter) and/or a Buja board (a round or square platform with a small ball under it). I like to teach puppies to deal with motion occurring underneath them and that they can control it by shifting their weight. I find this helps dogs with the teeter later on since they have already had experience dealing with motion. I teach my puppy how to get on, sit, down, and walk on it while keeping his balance. If I can get my puppy to play tug on the Buja board, I do. October 09 | Clean Run
