Training Play by Using Prey Drive
We can use a food toy or any toy to teach play by breaking down the stages of prey drive. Generally the drive begins from sensing the prey by smell or sight, to tracking the prey, then chasing, pouncing, biting, tearing/tugging, and finally to killing and eating the prey. It is a matter of encouraging and incorporating these behaviors into the tugging game. Each time you work with your dog, aim to get a bit more out of each play session. In essence, you are asking for the next step

of prey drive (including working toward more duration and intensity within each step) before you end the game each time. Once you feel your dog is turning on to the game, begin to vary the times the food is even involved with the toy. Sometimes it is there and sometimes it isn’t. I have seen many dogs that have gone through this short process turn on to the idea of driving after or to a toy and also learn to enjoy tugging. Remember, you must have fun and enjoy the process. At the end of the day, it is all about playing with your dog! D
