A good general rule to follow in AKC is dog in and out of
the ring on leash.

In this setup with a swinging ring gate,
placing the leash as shown makes it
less likely a dog will go out the gate to
his leash.
Canine Performance Events
In this setup with an open ring gate
and a fenced chute, if the dog runs
into the chute with all four paws, it is a
mandatory E.
Many clubs now offer entry and exit ring
gates that swing open and closed so the
handler and dog have a physical barrier
from exiting the ring. The placement of
the leash chair is critical as well. Figure 1
shows how the placement of the leash
can aid the handler at the finish to keep
their dog in the ring. Many gates these
days are self-closing, but if the club is not
using self-closing gates, it is a courtesy
as you exit the ring to be sure the gate is
closed for the exhibitor running after you.
October 16 | Clean Run
Once you have met your dog after the finish line, AKC
requires the dog to be fully leashed prior to leaving the
ring. If the dog is wearing a harness, all of the buckles
must be secured as well. If this is not done, the dog is
considered to have left the ring without a leash on and
will receive a mandatory excusal.
CPE requires any dog the leaves the ring prior to finishing
its run to receive an automatic "no time," and the team is
excused from the remainder of the run. This includes a
dog that runs under/over a ring barrier or that leaves the
ring prior to crossing the finish line.
Once the dog has crossed the finish line, and therefore has a time for its run, the
dog must be "under control" when exiting the ring. CPE considers a dog to be under
control when it is either on leash or under verbal control by the handler. Failure
to control the dog can result in either a warning from the judge or a penalty of 5
points up to excusal from that particular run.
CPE does not allow toys and treats within 10' of the ring. So with a dog that likes to
tug on the leash, you cannot engage in active tug within 10' of the ring. If your dog
jumps up for its tug leash, it is important to not actively tug with the dog until you
are outside of the allowed limits.
CPE trial rings are typically designed with an entry and exit chute. CPE allows the
closing of the gate at the end of the entry/exit chute at the request of the han-
