Body Awareness

Puppies need to experience many different surfaces, balance challenges,
and noises. It is important to expose
your puppy to foundation movements
for agility as well as strength-training
equipment so that when his growth
plates are closed you can proceed to
the next level of fitness training where
it is safe to add in duration, repetition,
and concussive activity.
The recommendations listed below are
to encourage short sessions, to build
a good foundation of movement and
to remind you to "play" during every
training session.

4 Things We Know About Puppies
1. Puppies have short attention spans.
3. Puppies are growing every day.
4. Puppies love to play.
When working with your puppy on
strength and body awareness exercises it is important to keep the first three
things in mind and make sure you are
always incorporating play into your
training sessions.

Guidelines for Training Sessions
*	 Training sessions should not exceed 1 minute for every month of
age; for example, sessions for

*	 You can do two or more short sessions during the day rather than
one longer session.
*	 Be careful not to give your puppy
too many treats because it can
cause tummy upset.
*	 Use your puppy's meals for training-just split the meal up into
parts for the number of training
sessions planned.
*	 Always end a session when your
puppy is coming back for more; don't
wait until his interest is waning.

Using FitPAWS Equipment
and Balance Props

the equipment may move and you
could scare your puppy, which is
exactly the opposite of the goal.
*	 Allow your puppy on the equipment for a few seconds to find his
balance and then take him off the
equipment. There is no duration
used when you're training a puppy.
Fitness obstacle courses made up of
FitPAWS wobble boards, peanuts, donuts, K9FITbones and other equipment
are fantastic ways to increase body
awareness, strength and balance. Walking over the obstacles in a controlled
manner is the goal; if you move too fast,
it does not give your puppy a chance to
find his balance or footing, and it does
not increase muscle activation.

2. Puppies have small tummies.

a 4-month-old puppy should not
be longer than 4 minutes.

Use FitPAWS inflatable equipment to
increase confidence, to train balance,
and to desensitize your puppy to a variety of surfaces. But keep the following
in mind when using this equipment:
*	 Give your puppy a verbal marker
signal when he is on the equipment like "yes" to let him know he
is right, or use a clicker.
*	 Reward with your tug toy or play off
equipment. If you offer a toy or play
while your puppy is on equipment,
he may slide off the equipment or
