© PHOTOGRAPHY BY LESLEY Weave pole performance in black and white Non-rewardable behaviors: • Entering incorrectly • Doing fewer than all poles, even if those poles are done correctly • Skipping poles • Entering before asked • Stopping in the poles Rewardable behaviors: • Enter correctly and do all the poles in front of you between poles #1 and #2 without doing #3 is not correct entry; therefore, no reward for that behavior. Eventually, the behavior evolves even further: do weave poles until there are no more to do. At a trial last week I noticed many novice dogs popping out at that evil pole #10. As I watched, I found myself wondering if Trip would do more than 12, figuring that if he will do more than 12 correctly he does understand the behavior and therefore is less likely to pop out at pole #10 at a trial. When I got home the first thing I did was put together a set of 18.Trip demonstrated that he does indeed understand that you do poles until there are no more to do. Once he did 17 instead of 18 and cussed me rather vigorously (he knows more cuss words than I do) and then he did 18 to earn his reward. If I am black or white in what I will reward, my dog knows when he is right—or wrong—by the absence of that reward. Sometimes a student will ask when training, “Should I have rewarded that?” My response lately is becoming more and more repetitive. I simply ask them: Is that the behavior you want? Whether or not to reward becomes clearer when you ask yourself that question over and over again during your training. Next month we’ll look at training in black and white while working on the contact obstacles. D Operant Training Principles Our training is based on the use of operant training principles.There are three basic principles that anyone training a dog should be aware of: 1. Behavior that is rewarded will repeat itself 2. Behavior that is ignored will go away 3. You get the behavior you reward, not the behavior you want Rewarding an incorrect or incomplete behavior is where most people go wrong. Ask yourself what behavior you are rewarding. Did you just reward the dog for doing 12 poles because he “only missed one” in the middle? You are rewarding your dog for missing poles. Did you reward for 8 “awesome” poles even though there were 12 in front of the dog? You are rewarding popping out of the poles. Continually ask yourself: Is this the behavior I want?
