Everything you always wanted to know about agility By Brenna Fender All my friends have gotten this month’s issue of Clean Run, but I don’t have mine yet. My subscription was up but I had one bonus month listed so I figured that I didn’t have to renew right away. But maybe I’m wrong about what the bonus number means? Bonus issues are automatically added to the “Months Left” shown on your label. So if it says you have zero months left, you have no issues left no matter how many “Bonus Months” the label shows because those have already been added to your subscription. For example, if your label says 2 bonus months and 4 months left, you have 4 more months in your subscription, not 6 months. Unfortunately, it’s necessary for people to renew their subscription before it runs out to avoid missing an issue. Deadlines are much farther ahead than you might think. While you were reading the September issue of the magazine, CR was finalizing the mailing list for the October issue. That means that any address changes or renewals that came in after September 10 can’t take effect until the November issue. If you are in doubt about when you need to renew, look at the facer sheet that comes with each issue. It’s the piece of paper that sits on top of the magazine inside the plastic bag used to mail each issue. If you have three or fewer issues remaining, you’ll get a blue and white facer sheet that includes a renewal form and a postage-paid envelope to make it easier for you to renew. When you have just one issue remaining, you’ll get a facer sheet that says “Last Chance.” This is your last chance to renew and ensure that you won’t miss an issue. With your final issue, you will get an orange and white facer sheet that notifies you that you are receiving your final magazine. Both the “last chance” and “final issue” facer sheets also include a postage-paid envelope. If you don’t want to miss an issue, don’t wait until you receive the orange and white facer sheet. Renew during one of the three months in which you get the clearly marked blue and white sheet that says, “Don’t be left at the start line….” How do you get bonus months? By referring people to subscribe to the printed magazine (digital subscriptions are excluded from this program). If a new subscriber signs up and mentions your name at the time of purchase, CR adds a bonus month to your subscription. After 10 referrals, you get an additional two months free. When and how does it apply? This rule is often erroneously believed to apply to AKC agility trials, but in reality, it’s NADAC and CPE that have rules prohibiting the use of food, toys, and training devices within 10' of the ring. NADAC and CPE competitors need to be aware of this as they approach the ring area, and must make other provisions for food and treats that don’t involve leaving them ringside. What is the AKC PAL program? PAL stands for “Purebred Alternative Listing,” which is now part of the PAL/ILP (Indefinite Listing Privilege) program. This program allows unregistered dogs of registrable breeds to compete in AKC Performance and Companion Events. It is also used for the 41 specific breeds in the AKC Foundation Stock Service (FSS) program that are eligible for Companion Events. Owners of unregistered purebreds may apply for the PAL/ILP program to be allowed to compete in various AKC events. All PAL/ILP registered dogs may compete in agility, junior showmanship, obedience, rally, and tracking. Certain breeds are also eligible for breed-specific events like hunting and lure coursing. After enrolling in the PAL/ILP program, owners follow the same process to enter AKC agility events as any other dog owner.
