In these cases, the puppy buyer needs
to realize that the status of the sire and
dam are unknown because an ETO
problem will not be expressed in dogs
that don't jump. The buyer must understand this and thus assume the risk.

Ideally, performance dog breeders will
survey former puppy buyers, inquiring about jumping problems in the
puppies they've sold that are 4 years
old and older. Alternatively, they can
request video footage of puppies they
have sold competing over jumps and
evaluate the dogs themselves. By identifying potentially affected dogs, it may
be possible for breeders to identify if
speciﬁc dogs in their kennel are at risk
for producing it. If a breeder chooses
to keep those dogs in their breeding
program, it would be prudent to establish an open line of communication
with prospective performance puppy

Until we learn how to diagnose and
treat all of the causes of ETOs, the
only way to deal with it is prevention.
Hopefully more breeders will realize
that ultimately they will be responsible
for what happens with ETOs, because
prevention of the cause(s) is the only
real option at this point in time. D
