Retraining Case Studies The A-frame Despite target work and stride regulators, TangoBango, a Welsh Springer Spaniel, began coming down the A-frame to her two-on/two-off position with intermittent hesitation, likely from sore shoulders. After the 2007 nationals, Mary Mandich-Steiterwald, her handler, took about six months to switch over to a running A-frame. The high-repetition retraining process, using Ali Roukas-Canova’s running contact method, took place while TangoBango was on maternity leave. With the A-frame set very low, TangoBango could still practice running and pouncing on a touch board. Mandich-Steiterwald also used a hoop, which she says “reinforces that she needs to run all the way to the ground, not pounce and fly.” Finish Line Joe Willmore’s Rat Terrier Ike loves racing around with his soccer ball, his reward in training. Unfortunately, those play parties transferred to the ring. After crossing the finish line, Ike often zipped out to celebrate, leaving Willmore behind and losing Qs in the process. To fix it, Willmore asked for a sit-stay at the completion of each run, with a mild “good boy.” Then he lassoed Ike with his slip lead and walked away, 30 seconds before the celebration began. Start-line Stay Julie Rice allowed her Border Collie Jaime his somewhat unsettled sit-stay for years. He pranced with his front feet. “I didn’t realize that was the slippery slope,” Rice admits. During a three-dog relay at the Southeast Regionals, when Jaime was five or six, Rice realized she needed to fix it: “He was barely bothering to sit. Jaime had the last leg, and it was a long, straight start. I was going to have to lead out. That was such an uncomfortable feeling for me, not having any control.” Rice chose a down-stay as her new start-line behavior. During the off-season, she began right in front of a jump at home, but it was hard to get him to break, so Rice used a class as her proving ground. There, when Jaime made a mistake, he only had to wait a few minutes to try again. She’d simply move him back in the rotation. Rice used a sympathetic tone, as if it wasn’t her decision to pull him: “It was so funny to see his face at first. He would be like, ‘Whaaat?’” When Rice took Jaime back into the ring, he did break, and she pulled him. He blew it for a few classes on Saturday and a couple on Sunday, then maybe one or two at trials after that, but Rice says, “It just ceased to be a problem. It was reliable, anywhere, anytime, and my stress level went way down.” Teeter Rosie, a five-year-old Basset Hound, started her teeter career on a wobble Barking Anne Ibach’s Australian Shepherd Billie barks on course. If it doesn’t affect her performance, Ibach is fine with that. But, after Billie earned her first MACH, barking on the table became a time-eating problem. Determined to fix it, Ibach searched for something else that caused Billie to bark—bubbles. A couple of nights a week for a month, Ibach took Billie and her terrier outside to chase bubbles. Ibach explains, “I started with both dogs because I wanted the fun to continue when she was put away. I would blow bubbles, and the minute she made a peep, I would say ‘No bark,’ and initially I would take her by the collar into the house. The first few times, it was literally a wrestling match.” But over time Billie got the idea and graduated to a crate when she barked. Stay quiet? The fun continued. Bark? The end. Ibach took the no-barking criteria into the ring and admits pulling Billie: “I had to give away some runs. It wasn’t 15 consecutive runs, but I probably gave away at least 7-8 runs over a 4-5 month period.” Three years later, Ibach sometimes still has to pull Billie, but adds, “In her MACH3 run last fall, she was in a down position when she hit that table. It was gorgeous. I really do consider it my greatest training accomplishment.” board. She graduated to an adjustable teeter, with lots of hand-fed rewards and cheerleading. Her handler Anita Sacrey saw no signs of worry. But, as soon as Rosie began trialing, her teeter performance fell apart. She’d get to the pivot point and bail, or she’d get on the teeter and refuse to get off. Sacrey started over with a nearly flat teeter and a two-stage reward system from traditional food targets and a MannersMinder (a remote reward training system). The first target at the end of the teeter taught Rosie to drive to the bottom, and the treat-delivery gizmo encouraged her to run off and continue. The process took about five weeks in spring 2007, with Sacrey and Rosie working a little bit each day. Food targets rather than hand-fed treats made a difference for Rosie; her performance became a bit less handler focused and more independent. © EILEEN ANDERSON © M. NICOLE FISCHER PHOTOGRAPHY She points out that a running A-frame feels like a spread or a triple: “I can often get ahead of her on the A-frame. I really love it. You don’t have to hang around They just motor on through it, like they’re jumping.” 66 Clean Run | December 08
