Tunnels Susan Phillips added up all of the NQs for her Papillon Gizmo in late 2006 and realized that off-course tunnels were a problem. So, she used the winter off-season for tunnel control work. Since Gizmo is so small, she set up a few jumps and a child’s tunnel in her basement—one of the perks of retraining a small dog. Phillips says, “I had the tunnel in a really obvious spot so that he’d want to take it. What I did was direct him over the jumps and away from the tunnel, then give him a reward when he didn’t take the tunnel. He figured out very quickly not to take the tunnel every time.” If needed, Phillips used Gizmo’s name to focus his attention. Eventually, her body movement alone told him Tunnel-Go or Tunnel-No. Phillips says, “He started to read me better. He was just so intent on doing the tunnel that he totally forgot to read me before.” Gizmo earned his MACH3 in May 2008, and in all of 2007, with some 30 days of trialing, Gizmo only had two off-course tunnels, compared to seven in 2006. Utter Terror Karin Patrick’s Border Collie, Anya, did fine in agility training until she was eight to nine months old when she developed a broad-based fear. Even the clicker became scary. By December 2006, just a couple of weeks before her second birthday, Anya had what Patrick calls a nervous breakdown. During a seminar with her regular trainer at her regular facility, Anya became catatonic inside a tunnel and stayed there. “She was panting. Her eyes were scanning back and forth. It was awful. I was in tears. It was like I lost my dog,” Patrick recalls. The fear spread to everyday life, where Anya balked at going outside on leash and then pinned back her ears and tucked her tail, even on walks around her neighborhood. Anya’s medical exams revealed no problems: no thyroid or metabolic irregularities, no injuries, no illness. Patrick scheduled a five-hour consult with University of Pennsylvania veterinary behaviorist Karen Overall, VMD, PhD, ACVB, which resulted in a detailed behavior modification plan and drug therapy (Prozac and Xanax). Patrick used the drugs during the initial foundation relaxation work before weaning Anya off because they were dulling her agility performance. When she re-introduced agility in spring of 2007, Patrick did so only through private instruction, where her trainer structured low-pressure lessons. Even now, Anya cannot deal with repetitions. Anya competes. While her performance by others’ standards might not measure up, she’s happy. Ultimately, Anya’s journey is one of re-teaching calm and fun first, with performance second. Patrick says, “It’s helped me become a better handler, trainer, person. We’re going to take several years to get where some teams get in a year. So what?” To Fix or Not to Fix Green handlers aren’t the only ones who face retraining situations. Even experienced handlers sometimes need to make a change. “It wasn’t my first dog © ALISSA BEHN/PET PERSONALITIES by any means, so I should have known better,” says Julie Rice of her Border Collie’s start-line problems, “but in a way, every dog is your first dog.” The decision about what to tackle and what to let slide is personal. If it’s costing time or Qs or causing injury or stress to your dog, then it might be time to take on the retraining challenge. But, if it’s a niggling thing that you simply wish your seasoned dog wouldn’t do, like veering to one side coming down the A-frame, you might want to reconsider training it anew. Reid says, “You might be beating your head against the wall.” D Roxanne Hawn is a professional freelance writer based in Colorado. Her work has appeared in The New York Times, Reader’s Digest, Bark, Modern Dog, AKC Family Dog, and many other newspapers and magazines. She also blogs about her ongoing behavior modification work with her anxious/fearful Border Collie, Lilly, at www.championofmyheart.com. the game the mental game Got your whole game?
