Everything you always wanted to know about agility By Brenna Fender ? Do USDAA and NADAC have reps that visit trials to ensure that all course requirements are met? At a couple of recent trials the ring sizes in both venues appeared smaller than regulations require. Obstacles for the USDAA trial were barely 12’ apart but on course maps they seemed farther apart. We train in 100’ by 100’ rings with courses set to the distances used by the venues. Should we practice tighter courses just in case? USDAA responds: Each course is reviewed before use by independent course reviewers, who rely on the judge to supply the information about ring dimensions. USDAA procedures call for a written report following each event by both the event secretary and the judges. These reports are reviewed carefully, and detected deficiencies are discussed with both the judge and the event organizer as appropriate. On occasion, a USDAA official does attend events when circumstances indicate such a visit may be warranted. Competitors are always welcome to send an email to info@usdaa.com to report conditions that might not be up to standard. Such communications are rare, but are reviewed in context with reports sent by show officials. The minimum ring size is 10,000 square feet “when the maximum number of obstacles is used.” This implies that a smaller area is permissible, but also warrants caution in the course design phase. In the regulations, 12' spacing is permissible, though not necessarily through the entire course, so training for all distances is advisable. Earlier this year, USDAA published a booklet entitled Guidelines to Course Design. This document, which may be downloaded free of charge from the Forms & Documents Library at www.usdaa.com, provides adequate guidance to trainers and judges alike for developing proper expectations for each level in competition. USDAA advises trainers to refer to these guidelines to structure training programs and also instructs judges to read and follow these guidelines in the course design process. NADAC responds: NADAC does not have a representative at every trial. We do, however, list the ring size on our Calendar of Events, and judges select their courses based on that information. If there is a discrepancy, the judge and/or the club must contact our office before the trial date. At no time is a judge to set a course with any distance that is less than 18' between obstacles, which is the minimum allowed. Do you have a question about agility rules or anything else agility related? Mail your questions to Brenna Fender: brennafender@gmail.com Brenna collects the questions and forwards them to us so we never see the names. Is it okay for me to whistle in the ring by using my mouth (not a device) to make whistling sounds? The AAC, AKC, ASCA, CPE, TDAA, and USDAA all allow handlers to whistle in the ring, even when it’s used to get the dog’s attention. Some associations requested that handlers be careful and considerate when whistling to avoid distracting dogs on nearby courses. NADAC’s representative, Becky Woodruff, offered a dissenting opinion: “We feel it is similar to someone using a clicker or a squeaky toy in or near the ring. It could easily distract other dogs. We don’t allow auditory aids other than [using a] normal voice or clapping.” If you are unsure whether the venue you are competing in allows whistling, just ask at the briefing. Even if you are running in a “whistle-friendly” venue, mention your intentions to the judge before you run. Your whistling sound might startle a judge who wasn’t previously informed and you might be eliminated before the judge realizes that you didn’t bring an actual whistle into the ring. It’s never good to make the judge think about whether something you do is allowed by the rules and regulations. Also, be courteous when whistling outside the ring. Even handlers who don’t whistle on course might do so at ringside and distract competing dogs.
