Practice a few times on both your right and left side. Don’t add more ex-pens until the dog is happily leaving your side to run through the last poles to his reinforcement. You could use a marker word or clicker to indicate the dog’s correct motion if you like, or you can just praise and throw the toy. © marcy mantell 2. Continue to set up more ex-pen panels working backward, away from the end of the poles (see Figures 4 and 5), one gate at a time until all the gates are on the poles and you can send your dog through the poles on his own to the tossed toy at the end. If your dog ever jumps over the pens or runs around them, drop back a step or do not move forward until your dog is confidently staying in the pens and running quickly to retrieve his toy. If your dog is hesitant or slow, do not add more pens. Use toys and treats and lots of excitement to get your dog driving through the gates. TOY TOY 3. Send your dog from every angle to the poles (see Figure 6), as well as putting the dog in a stay and recalling through the poles. Concentrate on sending the dog to complete the poles without you, but you should also add some movement once in a while, such as doing a rear cross behind the dog as you send him to the poles. You do not need to travel to the end of the poles; that is why you have a toy to throw. As soon as the dog has the desired weaving style and is traveling through the poles/expens as fast as you think he is capable, time your poles and record the speed, and move on to the next stage of training. I time the dog from the time his nose passes pole 1 until his nose passes by pole 12. Stage 2 Setup When adding wires, the goal is to add weave pole wires inside the ex-pen panels and not lose any of the dog’s speed or desire to perform the poles. You will install one weave guide wire at a time on the poles inside of the ex-pens at approximately two-thirds your dog’s height. See Figure 7. December 09 | Clean Run
